Pronger has back surgery

Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger is expected to make a full recovery after undergoing back surgery on Thursday.

The procedure, which was called a discectomy, took place in New York and was performed by Dr. Frank Cammisa at The Hospital for Special Surgery.

"Surgery went very well," said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. "A disc fragment that was pressing up against a nerve was removed. Chris will begin a walking rehab in a few days. At week six post surgery, he will begin core strengthening."

Holmgren also updated the statuses of forward Kris Versteeg and goaltender Michael Leighton.

Versteeg underwent successful surgery to repair two tears in his abdominal wall. He is expected to begin rehab in 10 days.

Leighton, meanwhile, had surgery to repair a torn labrum on Wednesday and will begin rehab in a few days.
