Flyers sign Holmstrom

The Flyers have signed 6’1”, 202-pound forward Ben Holmstrom from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks  to a future contract which will begin at the start of the 2010-11 season, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.

Holmstrom, 22, recently completed his senior year at UMass-Lowell of the Hockey East Association of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), where he recorded 23 points (9G,14A) and 69 penalty minutes in 39 games. His 23 points tied for fourth on the team and he led all River Hawks with four game-winning goals. He was recently honored by the Hockey East Association by being named Best Defensive Forward for the 2009-10 season, becoming the first UMass-Lowell player to receive the honor since 1998-99.

Over a course of four seasons with the River Hawks (2006-07 to 2009-10), three of which he was captain, Holmstrom has compiled 26 goals and 58 assists for 84 points and 201 penalty minutes in 144 games.

Prior to joining UMass-Lowell, he played three seasons with the Sioux Falls Stampede in the United States Hockey League (USHL) and helped lead the team to the Anderson Cup in 2006. A native of Colorado Springs, Colo., Holmstrom also helped Team USA capture a gold medal in the Under-17 5 Nations Tournament in 2006.
