Jones down, surgery likely

Tim Panaccio is reporting through Hockeybuzz.com that Flyers defenseman Randy Jones may need surgery after the discovery of a torn labrum in his right hip. If he goes under the knife, the recovery time is expected to be between six-to-eight weeks.

This news comes on the heels of the revelation that defensive prospect Ryan Parent will undergo surgery on his right shoulder and will miss at least 12 weeks.

It leaves the Flyers defensive corps whittled down to six:

Kimmo Timmonen, Ossi Vaananen, Braydon Coburn, Steve Eminger, Lasse Kukkonen and Luca Sbisa.

Panaccio reports that one solution to the problem may be the acquisition of a veteran and lose some salary. Bryan Berard, cut from the club earlier this week in an effort to squeeze in under the cap after Jean-Sebastien Aubin's contract, is still available.

The Flyers open up the 2008-09 regular season at the Wachovia Center on Saturday against the New York Rangers.
