Brady, Belichick take home Maxwell awards

Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski announced that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has won the 49th Annual Bert Bell Award as Professional Player of the Year. Brady received 501 first place votes, 115 second place votes and 76 third place votes resulting in 1,809 points on a 3-2-1 basis. There were 830 first place votes cast. In second place was Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre with 149 (1st), 247 (2nd) and 125 (3rd) totaling 1,066 points. Third place was Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook with (1st), 88, 203 (2nd) and 150 (3rd) totaling 820 points. The remaining 92 votes were divided among 13 other players.

Jaworski also announced that New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick won the 19th Annual Earle “Greasy” Neale Award as Professional Coach of the Year. Of the 830 votes received, Belichick had 284; second place went to Mike McCarthy, Green Bay Packers, with 225; third place to Cleveland Browns, Romeo Crennel with 131. The remaining 190 votes were divided among thirteen other coaches.

Voters for the Pro Awards are NFL owners, football personnel, head and assistant coaches as well as members of the Maxwell Football Club, national media, both electronic and print, and local media.

They will join the College Player of the Year Tim Tebow of the University of Florida and Mark Mangino, College Coach of the Year, University of Kansas, at the 71st Maxwell Football Club Awards dinner to be held at Harrah’s in Atlantic City on March 7, 2008. Joining Tebow and Mangino will be Dan Connor, the winner of the 13th Chuck Bednarik Award as College Defensive Player of the Year. The Club will announce some additional local awards later this month.
