Fresh from the Montreal Canadiens' Twitter account, unrestricted free agent Danny Briere is free no more, agreeing to terms on a two-year contract.
No financial terms were disclosed, but previous reports put the price tag at $8 million.
An absolute coup and the first big free-agent signing in the tenure of current GM Paul Holmgren, Briere arrived in Philadelphia in July of 2007 fresh off two huge seasons with the Buffalo Sabres. However, with the final two seasons of that initial eight-year contract staring the club in the face with a shrinking salary cap, the club used one of its two compliance buyouts on him back on June 27.
The 35-year-old departs the franchise with 124 goals and 283 points over 365 regular-season games, along with 36 goals and 68 points in only 62 playoff appearances.
Briere made his postseason prowess known three years ago, when he snapped Brian Propp's standing record with a 30-point performance (12G, 18A) as the Flyers fell short in the Cup Finals against the Chicago Blackhawks.
He'll skate what is expected to be the final years of his NHL career with the club he spurned six Summers ago when looking for a home away from Buffalo, and did not let him forget that fact until recently. TVA Sports reports Briere has full no-trade and no-movement clauses built into the contract.
