Union release Herdling early

Chester, Pa.  – Philadelphia Union have announced midfielder/forward Kai Herdling will return to Hoffenheim 1899 two weeks ahead of schedule. Herdling’s loan was set to expire on June 30 but has been waived early for the start of Hoffenheim’s preseason training this week.

“We would like to thank Kai for his contributions to our club over the last two months,” said Interim Team Manager John Hackworth.  “He was a consummate professional and it was a pleasure to have him as a member of our organization.  We wish him the best of luck with his career in Germany.”

Herdling joined the Union via loan on April 16 and started in three of four MLS matches, logging a total of 212 minutes. Herdling’s lone goal came in a friendly against the Harrisburg City Islanders on June 14.

The German international played the first half of the 2009 season with SV Waldhof Mannheim of the Regionalliga Süd, where he scored 10 goals in 14 appearances. He returned to 1899 Hoffenheim in January 2010 and has appeared once for the first team since. Before signing professionally, Herdling featured for the youth sides of SG Heidelberg-Kirchheim (1996-2000) & SpVgg Neckarsteinach (2000-2002).
