PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Soul have announced the assignment of offensive lineman Greg Ryan (6’5, 320, Western Kentucky) for the remainder of 2012 season. This now makes a total of 10 former Dallas Vigilantes’ from the 2011 season to join the Soul – including former head coach Clint Dolezel who is the Soul’s assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.
“Greg was one of the best offensive linemen in the AFL last season,” said Soul head Coach Doug Plank. “He will help anchor our offensive line and his chemistry with an already strong offensive line will result in a very smooth transition. It is vital in this game to keep your quarterback off the turf and give him time to dissect the defense.”
Ryan’s addition comes at a much needed time as the Soul placed All-Arena caliber offensive linemen, Zipp Duncan and Christian Johnson, on the Injured Reserve list over the past two weeks. Ryan will step in and play alongside 2011 Second Team All-Arena selections: Brennen Carvalho and Devin Clark. The Soul have allowed a League-low three sacks on the season.
Ryan spent the 2011 season with the Dallas Vigilantes. He played in four games totaling four tackles and one fumble recovery. In 2010, Ryan played for the Alabama Vipers and in 2009 was placed on injured reserve while playing for the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted rookie.
Ryan played collegiately at Western Kentucky University (2004-08) earning many accolades. In 2006, he earned second-team all-Northwest Region and honorable mention All-America recognition from Hansen’s Football Gazette. In addition he was twice selected the “Offensive Lineman of the Week” to go along with earning All-Conference honors, named an All-American, and was voted team MVP. Ryan was also a standout in high school, earning All-State honors in football.
