CLEVELAND, Ohio (September 16, 2010) - After making several key plays on both defense and special teams in Rutgers’ 19-14 win at Florida International, senior safety Joe Lefeged (Germantown, Md.) has been named as the Jim Thorpe Defensive Back of the Week.
Lefeged totaled six tackles, a pass breakup, forced two fumbles and had a 29-yard interception return. Both of his fumbles stopped FIU drives in Rutgers’ territory while his interception and return set up a short 32-yard touchdown drive that gave the Knights a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.
Lefeged also blocked two punts and his second block punt gave the Knights possession at the FIU 24-yard line, which set up the game-winning touchdown.
In addition to all these game-changing plays, he also returned two punts for 8 yards and returned two kickoffs for 42 yards.
Lefeged also became the first player in Big East history to be named Defensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the week in the same week.
