Eagles acquire Sproles

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired running back Darren Sproles from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a 2014 fifth-round draft pick.

Sproles played in 15 games last season for the Saints, rushing for 220 yards and two touchdowns while hauling in 71 passes for 604 yards and two scores.

"Darren Sproles is an unbelievable offensive weapon," said Eagles coach Chip Kelly in a statement Thursday. "He can do it all -- run, catch -- plus he's a proven winner. And on top of that, he can bring all of those dynamic skills to the return game as well. There is no question we were all excited once we found out we were going to be able to trade for him."

Over his nine-year career with the Saints and San Diego Chargers, Sproles has been an effective threat on the ground and through the air. He has rushed for 2,221 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught 378 passes for 3,381 yards and 27 touchdowns.

The pick the Saints are receiving was acquired by the Eagles from the Patriots when defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga was sent to New England during the 2013 season.
