Giroux in line to be named next Flyers captain

There has been speculation from a variety of sources that Claude Giroux will be named the next captain of the Philadelphia Flyers this week.

We wouldn't know that were the case, or that Giroux would be the logical choice, if not for a tweet earlier this morning from a Flyers insider which stated "Despite speculation to the contrary, I can confirm that there will be no announcement of a new captain for the today."

Reports indicate that any announcement on a captaincy will be made in front of the home fans when practice shifts away from Voorhees and takes place at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday evening. That session is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

While having no player captain is a choice -- the team did not have one for the entire 1992-93 season -- the responsibility needs to be shifted upon another player given that Chris Pronger, still the acting captain, has played his final NHL game in the wake of post-concussion syndrome.
