Muldoon to hed Big 5

Tom Muldoon
PHILADELPHIA (07/07/11) - Tom Muldoon, former president of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau, has been named Director of Business Development for the Philadelphia Big 5, announced the association’s chairman, Temple University Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw.

A renowned Philadelphia civic and business leader for the past four decades, Muldoon started his own consulting firm this past April, Muldoon & Associates, LLC, specializing in business development.

"On behalf of the athletic directors of the Big 5 institutions, I am excited to announce that Tom Muldoon has been named Director of Business Development for the Philadelphia Big 5," Bradshaw said. “There is no better person to lead the Philadelphia Big 5's corporate engagement than Tom and, with his existing relationships, we will feel that he is in position to help further the already strong Big 5 brand."

“This is an exciting opportunity as I have a love for college athletics and the Big 5 in particular,” Muldoon said.  "I look forward to the challenge of increasing the awareness of what is truly a Philadelphia treasure."

Muldoon, who served as president of the PCVB for 25 years and held numerous general manager positions in the hotel industry in both New York City and Philadelphia, continues in his role as co-chair of the Greater Philadelphia Life Sciences Congress, a division of the PCVB, whose mission is to market Philadelphia as “the life sciences meetings capital.”  During his time with the PCVB, Muldoon developed three congress, or divisions, of the organization, one being the Philadelphia Sports Congress in 1987, which he is still a member of its board of directors.

Muldoon is also collaborating with Nicholas & Lence Communications, led by Cristyne Nicholas, former president & CEO of NYC & Company, on various projects around the national travel and convention industry.

Formed in 1954, the Philadelphia Big 5 is not a formal, traditional conference, but rather an agreement between the five major Philadelphia area universities to play a round-robin series of games as part of their men's basketball regular season.  The competition between these five schools - La Salle University, the University of Pennsylvania, Saint Joseph’s University, Temple University and Villanova University - results in an annual "City Series" Champion.  Competition began for men's basketball during the 1955-56 season with women's basketball being added during the 1979-80 season.
