Union stumble in Vancouver

Vancouver, BC (June 18, 2011) – Philadelphia Union’s four-match unbeaten streak was snapped on Saturday when the visitors fell 1-0 to the Vancouver Whitecaps at Empire Field, also ending the expansion side’s 14-game winless streak. A first-half goal from defender Alain Rochat proved to be the game-winner.

The Whitecaps opened the scoring in the 12th minute, the first time the have Union conceded in the first 15 minutes this season. After an eight-pass build-up, David Chiumiento laid a ball off to Rochat in Philadelphia’s third. Rochat took one touch and struck with his left foot from 22 yards out, tucking the ball inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.

Vancouver has a golden opportunity to double their advantage in the 21st minute when former Union midfielder Shea Salinas made a run into the area and found Eric Hassli, but the Frenchman’s close-range effort was wide left of the mark.

Brian Carroll had a chance to equalize just minutes later following a free kick in Vancouver’s third, but Joe Cannon was up to the task, smothering save Carroll’s strike from distance.

Danny Mwanga, Michael Farfan and Roger Torres all came on as substitutes in the second half, but the Union were unable to find an equalizer.

Philadelphia’s best opportunity to level the match came in the 81st minute when Sebastien Le Toux found Kyle Nakazawa in the area, but after the midfielder’s shot was blocked, Le Toux's follow-up missed the mark wide left.

The Union, who remain in a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference, will return home for two matches this week, Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday followed by Chivas USA on Saturday.
