Soul fall on final play in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (April 4, 2011) – The Milwaukee Mustangs (1-3) recorded their first victory of the season when QB RJ Archer connected with Dwayne Ely Jr. on a 2-yard score with no time left to steal a 51-49 victory over the Philadelphia Soul (1-2) in front of 2,112 fans on Monday night at the Bradley Center.

“Everything we did right in the first half fell apart in the second half,” said Soul head coach Mike Hohensee.  “We scored six first-half touchdowns and only got one defensive touchdown in the second half.  That is unacceptable.”

Philadelphia QB Justin Allgood finished by connecting on 19-of-35 passes for 287 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.  Leading the receiving corps for the Soul was Larry Brackins with seven receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns, while Alan Turner had six receptions for 51 yards and two touchdowns and Donovan Morgan added five catches for 101 yards.

Philadelphia got the scoring start on the first kickoff when James Paul’s kick was recovered by Brandon Perkins for a touchdown and a 7-0 Soul lead.  The defense forced a turnover on downs which led to a Justin Allgood to Alan Turner for an 11-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

The Mustangs got on the board when Garrett Lindholm connected on a 20-yard field goal to narrow the score to 14-3.  Two plays later, Allgood found Brackins on a 22-yard scoring strike to make the score 20-3 to end the first quarter scoring.

The Mustangs opened the second quarter with a 9-yard touchdown by Ernest Smith from Archer to narrow the lead to 20-9.  But Ryan Vena answered the score with a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 27-9.  The Soul defense then recovered a fumble and Allgood capitalized by connecting with Brackins on a 33-yard touchdown for a commanding 34-9 lead with under seven minutes to go.

But, the Mustangs continued to hang in with a touchdown by Smith and a 1-yard touchdown run by Archer to make the halftime score, 40-24.

The Mustangs outscored the Soul 7-3 in the third quarter and continued to surge in the fourth quarter.  The Soul looked as though they were going to hold on when Jerome Hayes returned a fumble 47 yards for a score to take a 49-44 lead with under a minute to go.

Archer, aided by a drive-sustaining, pass interference call on a fourth-down play, was able to connect with Ely as the clock expired, capping a 20-6 fourth quarter run and taking the victory.
