Wings routed by Bandits

The Philadelphia Wings donned pink jerseys in a 16-7 loss to the Buffalo Bandits Saturday night as part of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) Cancer Awareness Night. Proceeds from the postgame jersey auction go to the Four Diamonds Fund.

The Wings (3-4) fell to the Buffalo Bandits (4-2) in a game that featured plenty of post-whistle scrums and one jaw-dropping fight. Early in the fourth, Wings defender Paul Dawson squared off with Buffalo’s Travis Irving and landed a punch square enough to keep Irving down and out for several moments.

Forwards Athan Iannucci, Drew Westervelt and Alex Turner all recorded two goals each. Defender Dan Hardy would net the other.

A special congratulation goes to Buffalo forward John Tavares on becoming the first player in NLL history to reach 700 career goals. Tavares ended the night with 5 goals. Bandits forward Chad Culp scored 4, Tracey Kelusky ended the night with 3 goals, Mark Stennhuis scored 2 while Roger Vyse and Brett Bucktooth scored 1 goal a piece.

The Wings will get a quick opportunity for revenge in a rematch against the Bandits in Buffalo next Saturday night at the HSBC Arena at 7:30 p.m. The team returns home to the Wells Fargo center Saturday, February 26 to take on the division leading Toronto Rock at 8 p.m.
