Union earn draw in first exhibition match

Philadelphia Union earned a 1-1 draw with the U-17 U.S. Men’s National Team in their first exhibition match of the 2011 preseason camp in Orlando, Fla. All-Star striker Sebastien Le Toux opened the scoring in the first half, but Alex Muyl leveled the match ten minutes before the final whistle.

The Union drew first blood in the ninth minute when Brian Carroll sent a long cross from the right that Justin Mapp drove into the left side of the box to Le Toux. The Frenchman capitalized and tapped the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.

Le Toux nearly scored again in the 16th minute after heading in a rebound following an initial effort by Carlos Valdes, but the apparent goal was waived off due to an offside call.

Despite dominating the tempo throughout most of the second half, the Union lost their lead late. A corner kick gave the U-17’s the opportunity they had been seeking for 80 minutes, and second half sub Muyl found the back of the net off a short pass from Alessandro Mion inside the box.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw at the University of Central Florida Track and Soccer Complex. Peter Nowak’s squad will take to the pitch next when they face the University of South Florida on Thursday, February 10th.
