The weather outside was frightful, and inside the Pavilion, the play was anything but delightful.
Yet in the end, Villanova captured its 11th straight Big Five contest and the coveted city crown with a 56-39 victory over St. Joseph's.
Curtis Sumpter scored 14 points, giving the Wildcats (16-7) their second straight sweep of the city series.
Darrin Govens with the Hawks (13-1o) with eight points and Ahmad Nivins, the club's leading scorer, was held to six points with 11 rebounds. St. Joseph's shot just 26 percent from the floor, committed 22 turnovers, made 3-of-14 threes and 10-of-22 from the charity stripe.
Villanova's numbers weren't much better.
The Wildcats shot 36 percent and made only 3-of-22 from long distance.
The Hawks drew within eight with just over nine minutes remaining on Rob Ferguson's dunk, but Will Sheridan converted from in close and Shane Clark made one of Villanova's three three-pointers to build a 50-34 moments later.
The 34 points were the fewest St. Joseph's scored against Villanova since 1939, when it unbelievably tallied only eight points in a 36-8 loss that was pre-shot clock era.
