The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have agreed to a two-year contract extension with 5'10", 185-pound forward Sami Kapanen, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. Kapanen is now signed through the 2008-09 season. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
"We are excited about having Sami around for a few more years," said Holmgren in making the announcement. "We feel that he brings a lot of qualities to our hockey team in terms of what he does both on and off the ice. He is a quality person and he's a good utility player who can play anywhere in our lineup."
"I am very happy to stay here," said Kapanen. "It's something that we were able to get done in a short period of time. I believe that this team is rebuilding in the right direction and we will be back contending next year. My family loves it here, so it was an easy decision to stay here."
Kapanen, 33, has recorded seven goals and seven assists for 14 points and 14 penalty minutes in 51 games for the Flyers this season. In 211 regular season games with the Flyers over parts of four NHL seasons (2002-03 through 2006-07), Kapanen has registered 35 goals and 56 assists for 91 points and 46 penalty minutes.
