Video: Incidents in first period of Bruins-Penguins 12/7

The first period of Saturday's Penguins-Bruins tilt at TD Garden in Boston got very contentious, leading to the exit of Pittsburgh defenseman Brooks Orpik on a stretcher after he was punched twice by Shawn Thornton.

The video below is culled from NESN's broadcast of the B's 3-2 victory, showing the entire progression of incidents from the first shift of the contest.

Eriksson suffered a concussion from the original clean, hard hit from Orpik, his second head injury of the season, and will not play in Boston's next game at the very least.

Orpik was sent to Mass General for observation, was released last night and will travel back to Pittsburgh with his teammates.

Thornton faces an in-person hearing with the NHL, meaning he faces a ban of at least five games, while Neal will have a telephoned hearing with the league for his actions.

You don't need an ex-referee posting on a blog of questionable repute to tell you that Thornton went after the wrong guy, and in the completely incorrect manner.
