VILLANOVA, Pa. (The Phanatic Magazine) – Several moves impacting the Villanova Basketball Staff were announced Monday.
Doug Martin, the associate head coach at Paul VI High School in Virginia, joins the staff as an assistant coach. In addition, John Shackleton is the new strength coach for men’s and women’s basketball. He replaces Lon Record, who accepted a position at the University of Illinois earlier this summer.
Meanwhile, Doug West, who served two stints as a Wildcat assistant from 2007-10 and 2011-12, is departing Villanova to pursue other opportunities.
“Doug s contributions to this program as both a player and coach are enormous,” stated head coach Jay Wright of West, VU’s fifth all-time leading scorer (2,037 points). “Our players and staff have benefitted from his passion for Villanova and the game of basketball. Doug will always be an integral part of our family and I know he has several exciting opportunities awaiting him in basketball.”
Martin joins the Wildcats after establishing himself as a rising coach at Paul VI High School in Virginia and with the AAU program, Team Takeover. Martin played collegiate basketball at UW-Green Bay for coach Dick Bennett from 1991-95 and later served as an assistant coach for the LaCrosse Bobcats of the Continental Basketball Association (1997-2000). He also played professionally in Australia and South America.
“We are happy to welcome Doug Martin to our Villanova Basketball family,” stated Wright. “Doug is an outstanding young coach with a bright future. I know the Nova Nation will join us in welcoming him to our community.”
Shackleton is a former assistant strength coach at Villanova, who was part of the football strength staff during the summer following the Wildcats’ 2009 NCAA FCS championship campaign. He then went on to become an assistant strength coach at the University of Pittsburgh and Princeton University before returning to the Main Line this summer.
“In his short time with us, John has already brought great energy and passion to our strength program,” stated Wright. “Our players have great respect for John and we are excited to add one of the best young strength coaches in the country to our program.”
