Union to play NY Red Bulls in US Open Cup tourney

Philadelphia Union will take on New York Red Bulls on Tuesday, April 27 at Red Bull Arena in a preliminary round match of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tournament. Game is set for 8 p.m.

New York won a coin toss to earn the right to host this match-up.  Should Philadelphia Union advance, they will play the New England Revolution in the next round at a site to be determined on May 12 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is an annual competition that is open to all amateur and professional soccer teams that are affiliated with U.S. Soccer.  It is the oldest tournament in the U.S. beginning in 1914 when Brooklyn Field Club took home the very first title.  Major League Soccer teams were first included in the tournament in the inaugural 1996 season.

Philadelphia Union’s home opener will be this Saturday, April 10, 2010 against D.C. United at Lincoln Financial Field.
