The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have traded defenseman Jussi Timonen to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a conditional draft choice in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.
“With the Phantoms having two defensemen coming back from injury, we will have a logjam on defense,” said Holmgren in making the announcement. “This will give Jussi an opportunity to play. He is a good kid and we wish him all the best.”
Timonen, 24, recorded seven assists and 14 penalty minutes in 14 games for the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, this season.
Drafted by the Flyers in the fifth round (146th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Timonen posted four assists and six penalty minutes in 14 regular season games for Flyers during the 2006-07 season. Over the parts of two AHL seasons (2006-07 and 2007-08), Timonen registered two goals and 22 assists for 24 points and 32 penalty minutes in 60 regular season games for the Phantoms.
