The Philadelphia Flyers realled forward Steve Downie from their’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms Tuesday.
Downie, 20, recorded a goal and 11 assists for 12 points and 63 penalty minutes in 13 games for the Phantoms this season. He leads the team in penalty minutes with 63 and is tied for third on the team in plus/minus at +5. He was suspended by the NHL for 20 games as a result of an incident during the Flyers-Senators preseason game in Ottawa on September 25.
Downie, the Flyers’ first round pick (29th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, recorded 35 goals and 57 assists for 92 points and 124 penalty minutes in 45 regular season games for the Peterborough Petes and the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League during the 2006-07 season. He was also scoreless in one regular season game for the Phantoms.
Over four seasons in the OHL (2003-04 through 2006-07), Downie registered 82 goals and 152 assists for 234 points and 506 penalty minutes in 190 regular season games. He was a member of two Canadian National Teams, which captured World Junior Championships (2006 and 2007). He was second on the team in scoring with 21 points (6G,15A) during the 2006 OHL Playoffs as the Peterborough Petes won the 2006 OHL Championship.
