The Philadelphia Phillies acquired infielder/outfielder Russell Branyan from the Cleveland Indians today for cash considerations.
Branyan began the season with San Diego but hit just .197 with seven homers and 19 RBI in 61 games. He was released on July 28 before signing with Cleveland on Tuesday. He played one game with the club's Triple-A Buffalo club.
Branyan is a career .229 hitter and can play third base, first base and both corner outfield spots. He has played in six playoff games over his 10-year career.
The Phillies have yet to make a roster move to accommodate the acquisition of Branyan, but the most likely candidate to be sent down is outfielder Chris Roberson. However, it is tough to envision Branyan remaining on the roster once Chase Utley, Shane Victorino and Michael Bourn all return.
