Philadelphia Phillies third base coach Steve Smith and catcher Carlos Ruiz were both disciplined for an incident that occurred in the top of the eighth inning of their game against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
Smith was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for his inappropriate actions during the incident. His suspension will begin tonight, when the Phillies play at Cleveland.
Ruiz has been suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount for making contact with umpire Bill Welke during the incident. Ruiz has filed an appeal and his suspension will be on hold until the appeal process is completed.
