Villanova blows doors off SJU in 'Holy War'
Villanova, PA -- Josh Hart scored 12 points with eight
rebounds as 10th-ranked Villanova cruised to a 74-46 win over Saint Joseph's on
Saturday in the 2014 edition of the Holy War from the Main Line.
Darrun Hilliard and Phil Booth each had 11 points for the Wildcats (8-0), who never trailed en route to extending their Big 5 winning streak to eight games.
'Nova was coming off an easy 84-70 win over La Salle on Wednesday night in the back end of a City Series doubleheader and didn't need to work as hard to take down their rivals in front of a friendly crowd.
Ten Villanova players scored at least two points as head coach Jay Wright went deep into his bench, which nearly outscored the Hawks by itself. The Wildcats' reserves combined to contribute 40 points.
"I know the numbers don't show it, but they're a very good rebounding team. In the first half, I thought we did a really good job on the defensive glass, where they can get a lot of buckets on their offensive rebounding," said Wright. "Over time, we've got a lot of (veteran) guys and they've got a lot of younger guys and I thought that was the biggest factor."
DeAndre' Bembry led Saint Joseph's (4-4) with 13 points and Chris Wilson and Brendan Casper scored nine apiece.
The Wildcats opened the game on an 8-0 run and led 17-2 six minutes in after hitting three straight 3-pointers. Using their three-quarter court trap, forced the Hawks to commit 13 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes and the Wildcats held a 16-6 edge in points off of miscues.
Hilliard knocked down a trey to make it 31-11 with 8:24 remaining, and Villanova carried a 44-24 lead into halftime.
The Hawks shot 26.5 percent in the second half and fell behind by as many as 31. Villanova used the first nine minutes of the second half to officially put things out of reach. The hosts held the Hawks to two free throws in that stretch, and JayVaughn Pinkston's slam made it 59-28 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the period.
"I think that what they do has been so well-drilled that it's a pleasure to watch," said SJU head coach Phil Martelli. "It's not easy to coach against but it is a pleasure to watch. I'm really in awe of how they are playing the game, how unselfishly they play the game."
Notes: Saint Joseph's has lost five straight at The Pavilion and 11 of 15 overall against their suburban rivals since the start of the 2000-01 season ... Villanova scored 24 points off 21 Hawks turnovers ... The Wildcats made 8-of-15 3-pointers in the first half ... SJU hasn't beaten 'Nova since a 74-58 shocker at Hagan Arena on Dec. 17, 2011 and hasn't beaten them on Lancaster Avenue since a 74-67 result on Feb. 2, 2004, in the midst of the Hawks' run to the Elite Eight.

SJU holds off Temple in Big Five opener
Philadelphia, PA -- December and it's City Series basketball again for the five member institutions as we approach three weeks to Christmas.
In the first of two contests between Philly college rivals on Wednesday night, Isaiah Miles scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Saint Joseph's Hawks held on for a 58-56 win over the Temple Owls in a Big 5 clash at Hagan Arena.
DeAndre' Bembry netted 11 points to go with seven rebounds for SJU (4-3), which faces an even larger matchup on Saturday afternoon against No. 10 Villanova in this season's revival of the Holy War.
Quenton DeCosey had 22 points and Will Cummings tallied 13 for Temple (4-3), which also rests until Saturday when La Salle comes calling.
It appeared that SJU was going to coast to victory after the first half, The Hawks led, 34-22, at intermission, after holding Temple to just 33.3 percent shooting, while connecting on 43.8 percent themselves.
The Owls found their stroke in the second half, hitting 46.4 percent from the field, while the Hawks managed a total of six field goals in the frame. Temple cut its deficit to a single point with 30 seconds to play on a layup from Josh Brown.
Miles then split a pair of free-throws on the other end. Temple had two chances to tie the game in the final seconds, but Bembry blocked a shot attempt from Cummings and DeCosey couldn't hit a shot as time expired.
The Owls had 14 turnovers, while forcing only nine from the Hawks.
The Hawks held a 51-42 lead with 8:44 remaining, but went cold from the floor. SJU would go without a field goal the rest of the way, but converted 7-for-8 from the foul line to preserve the win.
During that stretch, Temple came within 57-56 with 30 seconds to play on a layup by Josh Brown. The Hawks turned the ball over on their next possession, but an offensive foul by Temple gave the ball back to SJU. Miles made 1-of-2 free throws with 11.7 seconds to go to provide the winning margin.
Saint Joseph’s used a 12-5 run to take a 16-10 lead early in the contest.
Miles made 4-of-7 field goals in the first half, and the Hawks increased their lead to double digits, 27-17, with 4:31 to play. A three-pointer by Miles as the clock ran out in the first half gave SJU its biggest lead of the half, 12 points, at intermission.

St. John's tops St. Joe's at the buzzer
PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 63-61 loss to St. John's at the buzzer to end the season in the 2013 NIT First Round at Hagan Arena.
After Ronald Roberts hit two free throws to tie it at 61-61 with 5.7 seconds remaining, St. John's Sir'Dominic Pointer raced down the court and hit a fadeaway jumper from the left side as time expired to give the Red Storm the win. St. John's (17-15) moves on to face the Norfolk State-Virginia winner in the NIT Second Round.
Trailing 60-56 with 46 seconds remaining, senior Carl Jones drove the lane for a layup to bring SJU to within two points. Langston Galloway then forced a St. John's turnover at :34 and attempted a three-pointer. Teammate Halil Kanacevic grabbed the rebound and attempted a tip-in twice, and then was fouled on his third shot. Kanacevic made one of two free throws at :16 to pull the Hawks to within 60-59.
After a quick SJU foul, St. John's Jamal Branch made one of two free throws at :14, to up the Red Storm lead to 61-59. The Hawks called timeout and got the ball into Roberts, who was fouled and would tie the game.
Saint Joseph's made 5-of-8 three pointers in the first half to own a 32-26 lead at halftime.
Early in the second half, Saint Joseph's led by as much as 12 points and held a 51-40 lead with 11:03 to play. The Hawks then went cold, making just 1-of-14 from the field over the next six minutes. A layup by Jones at 5:50 ended that streak and gave SJU a 56-51 lead.
St. John's would go on a 9-0 run, ending in a dunk by Chris Obekpa, to give the visitors a 60-56 edge with 2:03 remaining.
"I think that the numbers tell the story. We shot 30 percent in the second half and they shot 55 percent," said Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli. "I liked the quality of shots that we had. I'm not sure we were as confident. I think that we could've been more aggressive off the dribble. But saying that, I think their shot-blocking got into our heads a little bit and we didn't finish enough plays in and around the rim."
Jones scored a game-high 21 points in his final contest as a Hawk and finishes his career with 1,845 points, which ranks third on the SJU all-time list. Galloway scored 16 points and Kanacevic had a game-high 12 rebounds.
JaKarr Sampson led the Red Storm with 16 points, while Pointer finished with 15 and Phil Greene IV had 10.

Strong second half lifts Saint Joseph's over Richmond, 61-55
PHILADELPHIA - Carl Jones scored 17 points and Ronald Roberts had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Saint Joseph's (14-9; 5-5 A-10) to a 61-55 win over Richmond (14-11; 4-6) in Atlantic 10 action at Hagan Arena. The victory snaps a two-game losing streak for the Hawks.
Langston Galloway made just two shots on the night but his three-pointer with 22 seconds to play sealed the win for the Hawks, giving them a 60-55 cushion.
Down 36-27 at halftime, Saint Joseph's opened the second half with a fullcourt press and went on a 15-0 run. The Hawks took their first lead since the first half when Galloway picked up a steal and fed Roberts for a dunk at 16:39, putting SJU up 37-36. Roberts then hit a pair of free throws and Galloway hit a three to score the 15th point in a row for the Hawks, giving them a 42-36 lead. Richmond ended its scoreless streak at 13:35 when Wayne Sparrow hit a layup.
Richmond would fight back and tie the game, 51-51, on a basket by Darien Brothers at 6:11. The Hawks would go up by 57-52 after a pair of free throws from both Jones and Roberts. Anthony connected on a three-pointer at 1:24 to pull Richmond within 57-55, but after a few missed shots, Galloway stroked the three-pointer that iced the win.
The first half was close with six ties and the teams trading leads. But Richmond would use an 11-2 run in the final 3:01 of the half to take a 36-27 lead into intermission.
"The press at halftime was Chris Wilson's idea. We had been thinking about coming out in the second half of games showing a little something so that was Chris' idea," said Hawk coach Phil Martelli. "The other guy who gets credit here is Halil [Kanacevic]. Rather than worrying about his minutes, as we started to play better basketball in the second half, he was the one that said to let those guys ride it out."
"But it was the defense. You come out and hold a team to 19 points in the second half, shooting 24 percent. We got just about every assignment right in the second half and that's coming off as bad a play as you can possibly make at the end of the half," said the coach.
Saint Joseph's defense held Richmond to just 19 points and a 7-for-29 shooting effort in the second half.
C.J. Aiken added 10 points and four blocked shots for the Hawks.
Anthony had 13 points for Richmond while Cedrick Lindsay chipped in with 12.
Saint Joseph's goes for a share of the Big 5 title when it faces La Salle on Saturday afternoon at The Palestra at 1 p.m. The game will be nationally-televised on the NBC Sports Network.

Aiken named A-10 Defensive Player of the Year
PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's sophomore C.J. Aiken was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year and classmate Ronald Roberts was chosen the Sixth Man of the Year, as the Hawks had five players receive conference honors. Langston Galloway was named to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team while Carl Jones and Halil Kanacevic received All-Conference Honorable Mention.
The five different players receiving A-10 honors marks the most in Saint Joseph's history.
Aiken, who headed the league's All-Defensive Team, proved to be one of the top shot blockers in the nation this season, topping the A-10 with 3.7 per game. His total of 116 blocks is tied as the third-best single-season total in SJU history. He led the nation at one point this year, and is currently ranked fourth. The 6-9 center committed just 44 fouls, which is an average of 1.4 per game. Aiken also averages double figures for the Hawks, with 11.0 points per game. He is the first Hawk to receive the award since Dwayne Jones in 2004-05.
Roberts has come off the bench in all 31 games and energized the Hawks with his athleticism. He is the team's third leading scorer with 11.1 points per game and is second on the squad with 6.0 rebounds. The 6-8 forward is also second on the squad in A-10 scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.4 points and 6.6 rebounds in league games. Roberts has scored double figures 18 times this season and becomes the first SJU player to receive the Sixth Man award since Tyrone Barley in 2003-04.
Galloway, who earned A-10 All-Rookie honors in 2011, is the top three-point shooter in the conference, hitting 49.6 percent from beyond the arc and making 2.6 per game. The Hawks' second leading scorer with his 15.5 average, the 6-2 guard has tallied double figures in all but six games, and has scored 20 or more points six times.
Jones, a 5-11 guard, is Saint Joseph's leading scorer with 16.3 points per game to rank sixth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring. He has tallied double figures in all but four games this season and has reached 20 or more points seven times. Jones tops the team in free throw percentage, hitting 80.6 percent, and is handing out 3.2 assists per game.
Kanacevic, who was in his first year on the squad after transferring to SJU, is a 6-8 forward who tops the team in not only rebounding, but also assists. He ranks third in the conference with 8.1 rebounds per game, while leading the league with his 10.2 average in A-10 contests. Kanacevic is averaging 3.6 assists per game to rank 10th in the A-10 and leads the Hawks with seven double-doubles this season.
Saint Joseph's (19-11; 9-7 A-10) is seeded fifth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament and opens play on Tuesday by hosting 12th-seeded Charlotte in a first round game at Hagan Arena. The winner of that game will advance to meet fourth-seeded St. Bonaventure in the Quarterfinals on Friday at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.
