(The Phanatic Magazine) - The Eagles have confirmed the death of former offensive lineman George Savitsky, who passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point, NJ at the age of 88 due to complications stemming from pneumonia.
Savitsky spent two seasons as an offensive tackle from 1948-49, playing in 24 games and helping the Eagles achieve back-to-back NFL titles. He was also part of an offensive line that blocked for Hall of Fame RB Steve Van Buren, who posted career-highs in attempts (263) and yards (1146) in 1949 with Savitsky playing tackle. Drafted in the fifth round by Philadelphia in the 1947 draft, Savitsky was an All-American at the University of Pennsylvania.
Following his playing career, Savitsky became a dentist after studying at Penn’s School of Dental Medicine with the money he saved during his playing career. Later, he would become a doctor of dental surgery, and later an oral surgeon.
Living in Ocean City, NJ at the time of his death, George Savitsky is survived by his wife (Doris Hurley Savitsky), their five children (Linda, George, Laurie, Joseph, Lisa), and eight grandchildren.
