The Philadelphia Eagles today announced they have signed TE Brent Celek to a six-year contract extension that will keep him in Philadelphia through 2016. The contract is reportedly for $33 million with $11 million of it guaranteed.
With the signing of Celek today and T Winston Justice last week, the Eagles have now inked 22 players on the current roster (including players on Injured Reserve) to multiple contracts. The 24-year-old Celek is among a core group of players currently manning the skill positions on offense, joining 22-year-old WR DeSean Jackson and a pair of 21-year-old rookies in WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy. In fact, the average age of the current roster is 26.6 years old, while 76% of that roster is signed through 2010 and beyond, including 22 players who are signed through 2012 and beyond.
A fifth round draft choice of Philadelphia in 2007, Celek has emerged as one of the NFL’s top tight ends in 2009, ranking tied for seventh in receptions (54), fifth in yards (601), and tied for fourth in touchdowns (5) among all tight ends. His reception and touchdown totals also lead the team.
A reliable and physical target, he earned the starting job this season after a strong postseason performance in 2008, when he led the team with 19 receptions and three touchdowns. He set a franchise playoffs record with his 10-catch performance in the NFC Championship game at Arizona.
For his career, Celek has played in all 43 games (22 starts) since entering the league, posting 97 catches for 1,097 yards and seven touchdowns. His reception and yardage total have improved in each of his three seasons.
Celek starred collegiately at Cincinnati, where he finished his career ranked third in school history with 91 catches and 14 touchdowns
