The start of Division I college hockey's regular season will occur this coming weekend, and USCHO released a pre-season poll of the top 20 schools, as follows:
1. Boston College (35 first-place votes) 33-10-1 National Champions
2. Minnesota (12) 28-14-1 Frozen Four participant
3. Michigan (3) 24-13-4
4. North Dakota 26-13-3
5. Union 26-8-7 Frozen Four participant
6. Cornell 19-9-7
7. UMass-Lowell 24-13-1
8. Denver 25-14-4
9. Miami (Ohio) 24-15-2
10. Western Michigan 21-14-6
11. Ferris State 26-12-5 National runner-up

Princeton, the closest D-I school to Philadelphia, doesn't begin its 2012-13 schedule until the 19th with a two-game exhibition against Guelph. The Tigers' first regular-season game is on October 26 at Brown, and their first official home tilt is November 9 against Cornell at Baker Rink.
Coverage of the college hockey season, on NBC Sports Network, begins this Friday with the Icebreaker Tournament in Kansas City featuring Maine, Notre Dame, Army and Nebraska-Omaha.
