Soul weather the Storm with dominating second half

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Soul outscored the Tampa Bay Storm 21-0 in the third quarter and cruised to the American Conference victory, 62-34, in front of 8,058 fans at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night. 

The Soul were led by Ryan McDaniel’s four receiving touchdowns and a defense that forced four turnovers on four interceptions.

“We realized we need to have all three pieces to win – offense, defense and special teams,” said Soul head coach Clint Dolezel.  “In the second half, we really came together and dominated using all three pieces.”

McDaniel finished the night by completing nine receptions for 72 yards and four out of our nine touchdowns.  Tiger Jones added six catches for 83 yards and one touchdown. Robert Redd had five kickoff returns for 67 yards.  He also had three receptions for 31 yards.  Derrick Ross had 13 rushing yards and made AFL history with being the first player to have over 2,000 rushing yards in AFL history.

Brandon Perkins helped the team with one interception for 16 yards and two pass breakups.  Rayshaun Kizer had 3.0 total tackles and two interceptions with three pass breakups.

The Soul started off the game scoring their first series with a 10-yard pass to Jones.  Five minutes later Tampa Bay responded with a 3-yard rushing touchdown by B.J. Hall.  Yet, Juan Bongarra missed the extra point leaving the score at 7-6.  Lacey finished off the quarter with a one-handed touchdown catch.

McDaniel scored his first touchdown of the game with 12:58 left in the second quarter.  Tampa Bay scored back-to-back touchdowns with 11:10 and then 9:42 left, with Rod Isaac returning a 7-yard interception, Dan Raudabaugh’s first of the game McDaniel then had his second touchdown of the game with a 4-yard pass from Raudabaugh.  With 0:12 left before halftime BJ Hall threw an 11-yard pass to Joe Hills scoring a touchdown for the Storm, with the score being 28-27 at the end of the first half. Notably, Ross became the AFL’s first in history to rush 2,000 yards. 

The Soul dominated the 3rd quarter starting with Romain’s interception then making a lateral pass to Goosby, bringing the score to 35-27.  With 8:19 left in the quarter, Robinson created pressure forcing an interception by Perkins leading to a 16-yard touchdown.  A few minutes later, McDaniel receives a 4-yard pass from Raudabaugh, making it 49-27 at the end of the quarter.

The Storm scored the first touchdown of the fourth quarter with Hall 7-yard pass to Hills.  A minute later the Soul responded with a 6-yard kickoff return by Martinez connecting to Shaw making the score 56-34. With 4:40 left in the fourth, Raughdabaugh made a 3-yard pass to McDaniel making that his fourth touchdown for the night.  The Soul defeated the Storm with a final score of 62-34.

Next week, in Week 11 the Soul will be taking on the Cleveland Gladiators on Friday, May 23 on the road.

Soul O-Lineman Johnson gets NFL chance with Cardinals

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Soul placed All-Arena Offensive Lineman Christian Johnson on the Other League Exempt List after the University of Kentucky product signed a futures deal with the Arizona Cardinals. 

Johnson's AFL rights remain with the Soul while he is with Arizona.

“We are very excited for Christian and his well-deserved opportunity with the Cardinals,” said Soul co-majority owner and current ESPN broadcaster, Ron Jaworski.  “Christian is a leader on and off the field and we are happy to see him get a chance to reach his goal of playing in the NFL.  Our football side of the organization – myself, Tom (Goodhines), Clint (Dolezel) and Phil (Bogle) – work diligently to get our players looks from the NFL teams and Christian’s name gets added to the list of success stories.”

As an AFL Lineman of the Year finalist, Johnson was part of the offensive unit that led the league in sacks allowed for the second consecutive season, by allowing only seven sacks.  In 2012, they led the league and set a franchise record of only allowing five sacks.

The Soul also announced the assignment of first-year Soul players: defensive back, Jacobi Jenkins (5’11, 195, East Carolina); wide receiver, V’Keon Lacey (6’4, 215, Angelo State); and defensive back, Kyle Whitehurst (6’0, 190, Hampton).

Jenkins, who enters his rookie season, was a four-year member of the Pirates and finished off his senior season with 30.0 solo tackles and 12 assists in nine games.  He finished his college career with 87.0 total tackles, 17 passes defended and two forced fumbles.

Lacey saw action in three games as a rookie with the Jacksonville Sharks in 2012.  He started all 11 games as a junior in 2009 at Angelo State, earning All-LSC South honors after leading the Rams with 74 catches, 878 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Whitehurst, entering his second year in the AFL, split one season between the Orlando Predators and Arizona Rattlers in 2012.  He combined to record 7.0 solo tackles, two assists between the two teams.  He also spent time with the Hartford Colonials (UFL), Virginia Destroyers (UFL) and Omaha Beef (IFL).

Soul begin training camp

PHILADELPHIA -  The 2012 AFL American Conference champion Philadelphia Soul are set to begin their training camp on Thursday when the team's 35-man roster is scheduled to report.

Practices for training camp will be held at the NovaCare Complex in South Philadelphia and will begin on Saturday, March 2.

Entering training camp, the Soul have 11 players from last season’s conference championship club.  The top returnees include: quarterback Dan Raudabaugh, fullback Derrick Ross, wide receiver Tiger Jones, defensive back Rayshaun Kizer and defensive lineman Bryan Robinson.

“It’s always important to have key weapons return to the team,” said first-year Soul head coach, Clint Dolezel.  “It makes your job a little easier as a coach heading into the season.  But, at the end of the camp, we still need to pick 24 of these very talented players.  It’s important that the players represent their full potential at this training camp to prove to us they will help our team win.”

Dolezel assembled a new coaching staff for the upcoming season.  Two-time First Team All-Arena performer, Phil Bogle, begins his second coaching stint with the Soul as the assistant head coach.  Former Philadelphia Eagle, Hollis Thomas; Chris McKinney; Steve Criswell; and Donald Malloy will join Dolezel and Bogle as assistant coaches.

First cuts take place on March 8 and will  reduce the roster to 28 players.  The final 24-man roster will be announced on March 16 when training camp ends.

The Soul open their 2013 season on Saturday, March 23 at 9 p.m. in Phoenix, against the Arizona Rattlers for an ArenaBowl XXV rematch, which will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

The 2013 training camp roster consists of 23 AFL veterans and 12 rookies. The All-Arena players on the Soul’s rosters are Jones, Kizer, Robinson, and Derrick Ross.  

Local hopefuls include  Temple DL/LB Morkeith Brown, Delaware State DB James Romain and East Stroudsburg DL Dustin Barno.

Soul gets six back

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Soul and the Arena Football League announced the assignment of six players to the squad for the 2013 season. 

Defensive lineman and East Stroundburg product Dustin Barno headlines the list and enters his third year with the Soul.

Barno will be joined by defensive lineman/linebacker Morkeith Brown (Temple), quarterback Steven Gachette (Southwest Baptist), defensive back Darius Pettigrew (West Georgia), wide receiver Armand Robinson (Miami, OH) and defensive back James Romain (Delaware State).

“We are pleased with this group of players coming to Philadelphia,” said Soul head coach Clint Dolezel.  “The road to the ArenaBowl begins with a competitive training camp and these signings demonstrate that we are moving in that direction.”

Barno, who became his AFL career in 2004, played four-plus seasons with the Colorado Crush before finishing the 2008 season with the Arizona Rattlers.  In 2005, he was a member of Colorado’s ArenaBowl championship team.  The standout defensive lineman tallied 128.5 total tackles, 31.0 sacks, 14 pass breakups, eight forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and five blocked kicks over his AFL career.

During his four years at East Stroudsburg State (1999-2002), the Easton, Pa. native tallied 143 tackles, 17.5 sacks and 36 tackles-for-a-loss.  He was named the NSCA 2003 Strength-and-Conditioning Athlete of the Year and also named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference First-Team Defense (in both 2001 and 2002).

Barno played in the 2003 Cactus Bowl, setting a bowl record with two sacks.  As a senior, he posted 45 tackles (26 solo), 11 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.  He finished junior season tied for No. 4 in the conference with 7.0 sacks and finished with 39 tackles, 10 for a loss.  As a sophomore, he totaled 46 tackles, 5.0 sacks and 12 tackles for loss and appeared in nine games as a freshman in 1999.

Plank quits as Soul head coach

Days after leading the Philadelphia Soul to an appearance in Arena Bowl XXV, Doug Plank has quit his post.

Plank presided over a Soul club which posted a 15-3 record and won the East Division of the American Conference, then topped New Orleans and Jacksonville before losing to Arizona by a 72-54 count in the title contest on August 10.
