PHILADELPHIA - Five months of ratings success wasn't enough for veteran radio host Tony Bruno, who is walking away from WIP due to his problems with co-host Josh Innes.
The odd couple of Innes and Bruno proved to be an afternoon ratings juggernaut, dominating the drive time competition over at 97.5 The Fanatic and long-time afternoon kingpin Mike Missanelli.
The marriage was a strange one to begin with as it was obvious about the only thing the 63-year-old Bruno had in common with the twentysomething Innes was a deep dislike for Missanelli, who often belittled Bruno was he was at 97.5.
"The format and industry in general no longer provide me joy and satisfaction, even after reaching number one in p.m. drive in record time in my hometown," Bruno said in a statement posted on his website.
Most believe Bruno did not like Innes' confrontational style with the website Crossing Board claiming Bruno's breaking point was the way Innes mocked an obviously inebriated caller.
Sources told The Phanatic Magazine that the real turning point was Innes going after former FOX29 traffic babe Kacie McDonnell, describing the now Kansas City-based reporter as a "cleat chaser," something Bruno, who counts McDonnel as a friend, was very uncomfortable with even though Kacie's dating resume certainly invites that kind of speculation.
For what it's worth Bruno denied both claims.
"I did not quit in haste because I "hated" or couldn't work with Josh Innes," Bruno said, according to Philly.com "In fact, I feel at peace knowing what I'm doing is right. I totally understand that my radio career in Philadelphia is over and can live with that. I have no desire to look for another radio or TV
job."
Innes, however, admitted he and Bruno were never close saying on-air that "we didn't talk a ton, maybe we didn't prep enough."
Bruno had been off the air for the past several days with substitutes working with Innes, who has been clearly uncomfortable after being muzzled by operations manager Andy Bloom from talking about the rift which began when a number of tweets calling for Innes to be fired were re-tweeted by Bruno before being deleted.
Innes often retweets criticism from disgruntled listeners like a badge of honor and a source claims Bruno believed he could do the same and that there was no underhanded motive coming from Bruno's end.
The same source claims Innes, while talented, is extremely insecure and took the retweets as an attempt to undermine him at WIP.
"The modern world of radio and social media has sucked the fun out of doing this due to "factions" whose sole attempt is to provoke "wars" or have listeners "take sides" to anger or distract the process of doing radio every day," Bruno claimed.
That seems like a direct shot at Innes, who has been very vocal in criticizing Missanelli from Day 1, a tactic that has resulted in short-term success. And to be fair Missanelli employed those same tactics, albeit more tempered, when he took aim at Howard Eskin years ago.
Innes actually disappeared from his show for a bit Wednesday before returning and announcing Bruno's departure. He was then joined by Bloom, who made sure to let his listeners know where Bruno's allegiance lies.
"Missanelli will continue to lose to Josh no matter what, and that’s the best part of this," Bloom said, reading an excerpt of an email sent to him by Bruno.
Bloom is the real culprit here because he hedged his bet on Innes, a witty broadcaster who dwarfs his competition in the talent department but is very controversial and willing to talk about things most others will shy away from.
Pairing Innes with anyone from the old school was not going to work in the long run and Bloom should either run with what he has or go back to the run-of-the-mill Philly broadcast, something a source at WIP called "all-violation radio," a slam at the pandering style of Missanelli and his good friend, former WIPer and current 97.5 morning host Anthony Gargano.

WIP picks Innes and Bruno for afternoon slot
PHILADELPHIA (The Phanatic Magazine) - SportsRadio 94WIP has announced that Josh Innes and Tony Bruno will be the station’s new afternoon hosts.
Innes and Bruno will be broadcast weekdays from 1:00-6:00 ET and will make their debut Wednesday.
The controversially Innes is considered an up-and-coming star by the CBS brass and joined WIP in 2014 as evening host from CBS RADIO station Sports Radio 610 in Houston. In Houston, he was part of 610’s top-rated afternoon drive show.
Some have labeled Innes as a bit of a shock jock but his real sin to his detractors is the fact that he is not nearly as provincial as the average Philadelphia radio host and the guy he is essentially replacing, Anthony Gargano..
“Philly has quickly become home for me,” said Innes. “I spent every Eagles game this year sitting in the stands with fans to learn what Philadelphians think and feel about their teams. I am tremendously excited to team up with Tony to deliver an entertaining show that we’re confident will quickly become Philadelphia’s most popular program in the afternoon.”
Pairing Innes with Bruno is a nod to the critics who only enjoy a heavily Philadelphia-centric show.
Bruno began his sports radio career on the WIP morning show with Angelo Cataldi and Al Morganti in 1991. He also was part of the original crew to launch both ESPN Sports Radio and Fox Sports Radio before beginning his own night time syndicated program "Into the Night."
“(In the) 25 years after helping WIP build the morning show and pursuing my dreams in national radio, it’s great to be back at the station, helping to take WIP to No. 1 in afternoon drive," said Bruno. "With my local ties to Philadelphia combined with the energy and talents of Josh, Philly sports fans will experience something they've never heard before.”
Rob Ellis, who had paired with Gargano in the afternoons, returns to host evenings from 6-10pm. Ellis has been with WIP since 2007.

Kobayashi to compete in Wing Bowl 20

Kobayashi was the winner of the famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest an unprecedented six years in a row from 2001-2006 and appeared at Wing Bowl 19, eating a cheese steak in world record time.

Eskin exits from WIP radio show
Longtime afternoon drivetime host Howard Eskin signed a contract extension with WIP but will step down from his afternoon slot, the station announced today.
Eskin has been the most high profile Philadelphia sports radio personality for a quarter century but his bombastic style that relied more on confrontation than research or homework was clearly wearing thin on a listening audience that seems better educated these days.
Eskin will host WIP's Eagles game day coverage and remain a sideline reporter, while contributing to other shows and fill in as a substitute host.
Sources have confirmed that glad-hander Anthony Gargano and Glen Macnow will slide into Eskin’s spot from midddays. It was unclear Monday afternoon where Eskin’s co-host, former Eagles linebacker Ike Reese, would land on the WIP schedule. My guess is Jody McDonald does the heavy-lifting for Reese in the midday slot.
"This new contract provides me with the ideal schedule for the future with the ability to remain part of the WIP team for years to come," Eskin said in a press release. "Working Eagles football and a variety of shows across the WIP lineup, while at the same time not having to work the 3-7p daypart will allow me the freedom to further explore some national opportunities I've had recently. I'm looking forward to this new chapter and challenge of my career."
"Since the late '70s, Howard Eskin has had more impact on the Philadelphia sports landscape than anyone I know," said CBS radio senior vice president Marc Rayfield. "He is now, and will always be, an icon in this city. We are thrilled he has chosen to remain with WIP while at the same time pursuing some exciting, new opportunities."
Despite the glowing spin most believe Eskin is being shoved out the door thanks in large part to Mike Missanelli at 97.5 The Fanatic, Philadelphia’s ESPN affiliate. Missanelli, who was fired from WIP in 2003, has topped Eskin in most key demos for months now.
“It was time,” Eskin said on his show Monday afternoon. “I approached our program director Andy Bloom and we agreed on a new contract that would give me the freedom to pursue some of the national opportunities that I have been able to dabble in over the last couple years while still having a role here at WIP. So after Sept. 2nd I will be giving up the 3-7 p.m. shift but will still continue as part of WIP, as part of the Eagles broadcast, along with the pregame shows and other shows and projects.”
Eskin then got choked up.
“You have often heard me say, ‘I’ve never had a bad day in my life,’ and I mean it,” he said. “This really another great day in a terrific streak and I’m just starting a new chapter.”

Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia has hired WIP's Rhea Hughes as the permanent host of CSNPhilly.com’s “Lunch Break”. Her first show will air on Monday, April 18 at 12:30 p.m. Guests will change daily and feature personalities from throughout the sports world.

Kobayashi set to appear at WIP's Wing Bowl
The World’s most famous eater, Kobayashi, will attempt to break the unofficial cheesesteak-eating record of 48 seconds when he appears as the International Ambassador of WIP’s Wing Bowl 19 at the Wells Fargo Center on Friday at 6 a.m.
WIP’S sold out Wing Bowl 19 will be aired live on SportsRadio 610 WIP (AM), on line at cbsphilly.com or wingbowl19.com and through a variety of mobile devices.
Winners of WIP’s Wing Bowl 19 will take home the largest cash prize in the history of the event, $20,000 in cash from Steven Singer Jewelers at the other corner of 8th and Walnut, and a 2011 Ram 1500 Pickup from Chapman Chrysler Jeep and Now Dodge in Horsham.
Wing Bowl contestants are selected for their ability to complete various challenging eating stunts before they devour chicken wings in the annual competition at WIP’s Wing Bowl. “I can’t wait to get to the game Sunday and I wanna personally thank Mr. Daniel Snyder for sending me my Donovan McNabb Redskins jersey. I cannot wait. I’m a little disturbed because I’m pulling for Michael Vick, but I always have said that Donovan never has gotten the respect he deserves in Philadelphia and before Michael Vick got into the game I did not know that. But I’m wearing my Donovan McNabb jersey and I can’t wait till Sunday at 4:15 Eastern.”
Do you know how stupid it is for you to wear that jersey this weekend?
“I can’t be a Donovan McNabb fan because I’m in Philadelphia? I’ve got to be an Eagles fan? (Host: You were never a Redskins fan correct?) You’re right. I’m a Donovan McNabb fan. On why the Redskins will win:

On whether or not he thinks the fans should cheer McNabb:
“You know what I would love to see the Eagles to do, the first time Donovan McNabb comes into the game, call a timeout and let him get the standing ovation that he so richly deserves. Then after that they can boo the guy and I understand that. They should do something to give the guy the standing ovation he deserves when the game gets started Howard.”
On why there is a debate about cheering or booing McNabb:
“What is the debate about giving the guy who is clearly the greatest quarterback in Eagles history. Clearly, not even close. He’s probably one of the five best players in Eagles history. I’ve been in Philadelphia since 1984 and trust me he’s head and shoulders above every player. Can you believe we’re actually having a debate about what kind of reception one of the five greatest players in Eagles history is going to get?”
On LeBron talking about race being an issue in the criticism he’s received:
“It’s like watching a movie. Just when you think it couldn’t get any stupider, it gets more stupid.”
On LeBron continuing to make bad decisions:
“Howard I’m telling you. Sometimes you just say he’s making bad decisions and you’re like okay, he’s gonna get it together. Then he makes more bad decisions. The thing that’s interesting about LeBron, I don’t think Magic, Michael, and myself, we said we wouldn’t have did it. That’s not a criticism. We were asked a question. I don’t want to play with Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, or Michael, I want to beat them. That’s strictly basketball. The only criticism I’ve heard about LeBron and it was my biggest criticism, that decision thing was just stupid. It was stupid. The second thing when they all came out there dancing around on stage, that was silly. That’s the only thing I’ve heard LeBron get criticized about. That has nothing to do with race. That’s what makes this last thing so stupid. That’s stupid. The only criticism of LeBron has been the decision and the one hour of our life that we can’t have back. And ESPN, oh my God. Oh my God. To go down to training camp and report everyday is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. I’m watching yesterday and one of the guys actually said LeBron looked fierce in practice. I’m a little disturbed because I’m pulling for Michael Vick, but I always have said that Donovan never has gotten the respect he deserves in Philadelphia and before Michael Vick got into the game I did not know that. But I’m wearing my Donovan McNabb jersey and I can’t wait till Sunday at 4:15 Eastern.”

Radio wars heat up
In any industry, competition is healthy.
When WPEN was floundering, WIP was stale. The result was bad radio on both stations for the listener.
Greater Media has been much more aggressive under the stewardship of veteran program director Matt Nahagian and has finally made inroads in the Philly sports radio war, nipping at the heels of 610's "guy radio" that has turned into a stereotype of what the national media thinks a Philly sports fan is.
According to the Daily News, in its first full ratings month since 950 went to FM as 97.5 "The Fanatic," Arbitron ranked the station seventh among its target of men ages 18 to 49, with an estimated weekly audience of 231,700, up from 131,000 in September.
WIP came back and claimed it was No. 1 among its own target, men ages 25 to 54, for the fourth consecutive month.
"We don't even notice that they're there. It's like comparing the Reading Phillies with the Philadelphia Phillies, Andy Bloom, operations manager at WIP, told Michael Klein.
That set off 97.5's star, afternoon man Mike Missanelli, who claimed on his show yesterday that WIP tried to hire him back to replace is nemesis, Howard Eskin.
"We have had no formal conversations with Mike. However, we are friends and I do speak to him from time to time," Marc Rayfield, market manager for CBS Radio, which owns WIP, told Dan Gross.
"I can categorically deny that any sort of offer was made to Mike," said WIP program director Andy Bloom. "He's trying desperately to create a story,"
Missanelli, who once teamed with Eskin on WIP and dislikes him intensely, called the person who made the offer at WIP "a weasel."
Both Missanelli, who was fired at WIP for punching a producer, and Eskin are playing the game right. As the underdog, Missanelli often points out correctly that Eskin, a staple on the Philadelphia sports scene, has been mailing in for years. Eskin, meanwhile, refuses to even acknowledge the other side. "What kind of music does 97.5 play?" Eskin told the Daily news. "Seriously, WIP is the sports-talk leader in Philadelphia. We just focus on what we do to create exciting radio for our listeners."
While the back-and-fourth is fun for people like me, it would be much more enticing for the listeners if each station concentrated of improving the product.
WIP remains as stale as ever, using the exact same formula for the last 20 years, while The Fanatic has turned into rah-rah radio. ESPN analyst Cris Carter even called out Missanelli out yesterday asking him if he was "just a guy doing a radio show" or a "fan."
Philadelphia needs a place to get sharp, incisive, educated sports talk and both stations are failing miserably right now.

Hackman to write forward for Macnow/Didinger book
A little local media news...
Legendary actor Gene Hackman has written the forward for the new Glen Macnow/Ray Didinger book, "The Ultimate Book of Sports Movies, Featuring the 100 Greatest Sports Films of All Time."
When the Eagles are on the road, Glen Macnow, Hugh Douglas, and Marc Farzetta will host the Eagles pregame shows and Rob Charry and Ike Reese will handle the postgame shows this season on WIP. When the Eagles are at home, Macnow and Douglas will be joined by Rhea Hughes, Reuben Frank and Joe Conklin from Chickie’s and Pete’s in South Philadelphia.
For ESPN 950-AM, Harry Mayes and Joe DeCamara will host pre-game shows before the Eagles games and Dan Schwartzman and Tom Byrne will handle the post-game shows.
On FOX29 John Anderson will once again host Eagles Game Day Live on Fox29. Hugh Douglas, Dave Spadaro, and Joe Staszak will also be part of the show.
Also, Eagles defensive lineman Trevor Laws will appear on the Ray Koob show every Monday at 7 p.m. on WMGK. The show will be broadcast live from Chickie’s and Pete’s in Bordentown, N.J.

Mitchell's WIP status
Former Eagles returner Brian Mitchell, who served as a guest host with the reeling Howard Eskin on WIP, claims he was let go by Red Zebra Radio was because he was too critical of Red Zebra’s sister company, the Washington Redskins.
WIP is quickly becoming the ex-Eagles station with Hugh Douglas, Ike Reese and Jeremiah Trotter already on board.
Closed circuit to Rayfield...I realize this is an Eagles town and an ex-Bird always carries a certain cachet to the locals but your once vaunted juggernaut is quickly becoming a series of amateur hours.
How about hiring a real radio professional and letting him cultivate listeners?
Patience in radio...what a novel concept.

Spike Eskin, a WYSP midday "personality," will join his father, Howard Eskin, on Howard's WIP midday show on Thursday.

WIP tinkering with Eskin
The Daily News' Dan Gross made some interesting observations regarding the afternoon drive radio battle between ESPN950's Mike Missanelli and WIP's Howard Eskin. The self-proclaimed "King" of the market, Eskin is now down in the coveted men 25-54 demographic that is the be-all, end-all in radio.
Gross maintains that Eskin now features more guests on his show, runs contests and seems to be acting more polite to callers.
He seems the same to us but WIP has been trying out different people as possible co-hosts or eventual replacements, the most recent being Rob Ellis.

Missanelli tops Eskin in key demos
The behind the scenes stuff in Philadelphia sports talk radio always generates interest.
Up until now, the battle between WIP and 950ESPN has been about as competitive as the Harlem Globetrotters and the Washington Generals.
610 was the 500-pound gorilla in the room while the folks at Greater Media stumbled from program director to program director.
But, every dog gets its day. Heck, even the Generals win occasionally.
During the 1971-72 Globetrotters "season", the Generals' name was alternated with the Boston Shamrocks, New Jersey Reds, Baltimore Rockets, and Atlantic City Seagulls. It was actually the same group of players but they would change uniforms between games to give the appearance of more teams.
Playing as the Reds, Red Klotz' team halted a 2,499-game skid to the 'Trotters in Martin, Tenn. on January 5, 1971. Klotz himself sank the game-winner in overtime to give the Generals/Reds a 100-99 win.
This past week, ESPN950 stopped playing Generals to WIP's Globetrotters.
According to Michael Klein, 950ESPN has scored its first major win against WIP when Mike Missanelli capped his first year as afternoon host by narrowly beating his former on-air partner, Howard Eskin, in audience share among their target demographic - men ages 25 to 54.
Missanelli, who started at 950ESPN in April of 2008, also beat the "Mail-it-in King" in the younger-male demos.
WIP is still ahead overall and Eskin did have better numbers among males 35 to 64. Meanwhile, 610's morning show with Angelo Cataldi, its midday show with Glen Macnow and Anthony Gargano, and night-time show with Ike Reese continue to dominate and each posted their best ratings of the year.
In other words, there's still plenty of work to do at ESPN950 but it's always nice to get a win, especially at the expense of the stale Eskin.

WIP's Startare pulls a Bob Costas
Bob Costas once jokingly promised Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame center fielder Kirby Puckett that if he was batting over .350 by the time his child was born he would name the baby Kirby.
Sure enough, Kirby was hitting better than .350 and Bob kind of relented naming his son Keith Michael Kirby Costas.
History repeated itself on a local level when WIP personality Brian Startare made good on a promise to name his son after Cole Hamels if the Phillies won the World Series.
Braydon Cole Startare was born on Friday.

Barkann in car accident
Radio can be dangerous. Comcast SportsNet’s Michael Barkann was involved in an auto accident Friday morning, evidently while he was on the air with WIP.
Update: The accident was minor and Barkann was not injured.
