The offseason saw its first surprise on Wednesday, as new GM Ron Hextall announced that forward Sean Couturier underwent successful abdominal surgery.
Couturier was not on the list of maladies which accompanied the usual end-of-season triage list, but Paul Holmgren hinted he had a sports hernia which might need fixing. He went under the knife this past Friday and is looking at a 5-to-6 week rehab.
The 21-year-old native of Phoenix posted career highs of 26 assists and 39 points over 82 games last season, his third in the NHL.
Speculation about his trade value is sure to continue throughout the off-season as Hextall gets his first crack at shaping a roster.
