Filling up the vacancy created when Erik Kratz was dealt to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Phillies made it official with catcher Wil Nieves, signing him to a one-year contract on Thursday.
Nieves appeared in 71 games last season for the Arizona Diamondbacks, batting
.297 with one home run and 22 RBI. Over the last two years, the 36-year-old has
batted a combined .299 in 103 games.
Nieves is a career .242 hitter with eight home runs and 103 RBI in 385 games
with the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, Washington Nationals, Milwaukee
Brewers, Colorado Rockies and Diamondbacks.
Additionally, the Phillies have signed right-handed pitcher Jeff Manship to a
minor league deal with an invitation to major league spring training.
Manship appeared in 11 games last season for the Colorado Rockies and went
0-5 with a 7.04 ERA.
In his major league career, the 28-year-old has a 3-7 record with a 6.42 ERA
