Laughton's Philly stay a short one

Scott Laughton received the maximum five-game call-up at the outset of last year's lockout-shortened campaign before being sent back to juniors. It would have been the usual 10 if things had worked out under the banner of a full 82-game slate.

The 19-year-old's stay in Philadelphia this year lasted a lot shorter. On Thursday, the Flyers announced Laughton, who made the opening-night roster before being scratched, will head back to Oshawa of the Ontario Hockey League.

Things keep getting curiouser on Broad Street, as it appeared veteran defensive pivot Adam Hall was subjected to the waiver wire just so the club could keep Laughton and be cap compliant.

“We felt this was the right thing to do for Scott and for the Flyers as it relates to his development," said Flyers GM Paul Holmgren.

OK, but why go through the kabuki of having him in training camp, presuming to have "won" a place with the big club and then not play him and ship him back to Canada? This could have been avoided simply by sending him back after the preseason was over, another training camp and taste of the big time in his pocket to take back to Ontario.

Laughton picked up 23 goals and 56 points in 49 games for the Generals last season, and a goal with two helpers for Adirondack late last year. Once he returns to the city where Eric Lindros once plied his trade, he will complete the suspension handed down from last year's playoffs, for an illegal hit on Barrie's Zach Hall, and then return to action.

Kris Newbury, swapped in the Summer for defenseman Danny Syvret to the Rangers organization, has been recalled from the Phantoms.

Newbury, a 31-year-old forward, totaled 61 points (20G, 41A) for the Connecticut Whale last season, adding one assist in six games for the Blueshirts.
