The closest living embodiment to the departed Chris Pronger is now a part of the Orange and Black.
38-year-old Hal Gill has passed his audition and earned a spot on the roster.
TSN's Bob McKenzie reports it is a 1-year deal worth $700,000.
Paul Holmgren is bidding on the fact that Ol' Gill has some tread on the tires for a 16th NHL season, but how many minutes he'll actually be effective is up to Peter Laviolette in an 8-man rotation.
It may be presumed that Gill would fill time until Niklas Grossmann is healthy, but it does little to bolster a back line which s uncertain after Kimmo Timonen and Mark Streit.
In a minor administrative move, Holmgren recalled Adam Hall from the Phantoms. Hall had been placed on waivers Sunday and passed through, but had to be stashed for cap compliance before the expected decision to place Pronger, finally, on LTIR.
