Long-time Daily News baseball scribe Paul Hagen has been selected as the winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for 2013, the highest honor the Baseball Writers Association of America bestows upon its membership.
"The
Phillies are delighted to learn that Paul Hagen is the 2013 J. G.
Taylor Spink Award recipient," said club President David Montgomery in a statement issued Tuesday evening. "He is most deserving of this prestigious
award. Paul
has a tremendous affinity and respect for the game of baseball. His
incredible work ethic and consistently enjoyable writing style have
served our game and its fans very well. We heartily congratulate Paul
on his well deserved selection and look forward to his induction in
Cooperstown next July.”
The graduate of Ohio University began covering the Phillies in 1987 and moved up to a columnist's role in 2007 before taking his current role with MLB.com. Other former Philadelphia baseball beat writers to be honored were Bill Conlin (2011), Bus Saidt (1992), Ray Kelly (1989) and Allen Lewis (1981).
