After a neat five-year run through football stadiums and baseball venues, the National Hockey League cancelled the Winter Classic on Friday.
The 2013 edition of the New Year's Day spectacular was supposed to pit the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Detroit Red Wings at Michigan Stadium, but it's all for naught due to the lack of a Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Flyers fans will always have the memory of the 2010 and 2012 classics, both losses, the most recent one a 3-2 setback to the New York Rangers on January 2 at Citizens Bank Park.
There is hope, however. According to a report earlier in the day from the Associated Press, the Wings will get another crack at hosting the event in 2014.
Both sides have not has serious discussions since October 18, and the current lockout, which began on September 16, has caused the cancellation of 327 games -- all but the latest one through November 30.
