Boston College continues its reign at the top of Division I hockey world, snagging most of the first place votes in the new poll released on Monday.
The Eagles continued their romp through the Hockey East schedule with two wins, on Friday and Sunday, to go 6-1-0 on the year. Jerry York is now five victories away from tying Ron Mason's all-time mark of 924 career wins after guiding BC to positive decisions at Maine (4-2) and against UMass (3-2).
In the former, sophomore forward Johnny Gaudreau (Carneys Point, NJ/Calgary Flames draft pick) and Steven Whitney scored in the third period to snap a 2-2 deadlock and pick up a rare win at Alfond Arena. In the latter, Parker Milner made 29 saves and Patrick Brown netted the winner with 3:37 left in regulation.
BC hosts seventh-ranked Notre Dame on Friday as the appetizer to the BC-ND football game on Saturday, then travels up Commonwealth Avenue to clash with BU on Sunday evening.
Minnesota remained in the second spot after splitting two games in a home-and-home with Mankato State, winning at Mariucci on Friday by a 3-2 count but dropping a 5-3 decision on Saturday. Third-ranked Denver also split two with WCHA rival St. Cloud State at Magness Arena, losing 3-0 then winning 6-1. Cornell moved up from sixth to fourth courtesy of a win and tie in a home-and-home against Colgate. Miami-Ohio slipped one slot to fifth after a split with national runners-up Ferris State, losing 3-0 and winning 4-2.
Penn State ran its record to 5-2-0 with a 4-2 victory over Buffalo State in the Nits' lone game over the weekend. After a cancellation of an Oct. 30 tilt with Fredonia State, the Lions returned to form on Saturday at the 'Peg. Matt Skoff made 23 stops, while Michael Longo and Tommy Olczyk lit the lamp in the middle period to provide the hosts with a 3-1 edge.
Guy Gadowsky's kids will host Army for a pair this weekend in University Park.
Princeton enjoyed an off week, and will return to action this weekend with a pair of games at Baker Rink -- welcoming Ivy rivals Cornell on Friday and ECAC foes Colgate on Saturday.
Nebraska-Omaha swept a pair at Michigan Tech over the weekend, but neither game featured Flyers goaltending prospect Anthony Stolarz. Instead, John Faulkner picked up both victories, 2-1 on Friday and 5-3 on Saturday. Stolarz, the 18-year-old from Jackson, NJ, hasn't played since giving up three goals on 10 shots and being yanked against Bemidji State on October 27.
The Mavericks will host Minnesota-Duluth this coming week.
