The Philadelphia Soul have acquired offensive lineman Robbie Powell by fulfilling their future considerations, made available through the Tuesday, May 17 trade with the San Jose SaberCats.
“We are excited to finally get Robbie Powell to Philadelphia,” said Soul head coach Mike Hohensee. “I was fortunate enough to have worked with Robbie in 2009 and experienced first-hand what a fine, young man he is, as well as a quality football player.”
The transaction that inevitably brought Powell to Philadelphia was the three-way trade which sent quarterback Justin Allgood to the Tulsa Talons for the rights to wide receiver Rodney Wright. The Soul then traded Wright to the SaberCats for lineman Patrick Afif and future considerations. Once Powell was activated off of the injured reserve list, he was traded to Philadelphia.
The two-year Arena Football veteran started at center for the SaberCats in seven games this season prior to being placed on the injured reserve list on Friday, April 29. In 2010, Powell started all 19 games, including the regular season and playoffs, for the Tampa Bay Storm. That season, Powell and the Storm won the American Conference Championship and appeared in ArenaBowl XXIII. Powell also played for the Peoria Pirates (af2) in 2009, where he was coached by Hohensee.
Prior to his career in Arena Football, Powell, a Purdue product, spent time with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL in 2009 and the Cleveland Browns of the NFL in 2008.
The former Boilermaker played four seasons (2004-07) as an offensive lineman for Purdue. Powell became the team’s starting left guard his sophomore year, then was moved to center for his final two seasons. In 2006, Powell received the Pit Bull Award for Offense, given to the player that exemplifies and sustains tenacity and intense play throughout the season. Powell played on both the offensive and defensive line at the Fork Union Military Academy, prior to transferring to Purdue.
