Second City Slowdown

Philadelphia, PA - The Derrick Rose era got off to a rather productive start in the Windy City last year.

The NBA's reigning Rookie of the Year helped will the Bulls to the playoffs before the team succumbed to Boston in one of the more exciting playoff series in NBA history.

Of course, there are no moral victories in sports -- at least among the good teams. You'll never hear the Lakers or Celtics talking about keeping a game or a series close. Winning is the only acceptable option.

I'm not saying the Bulls were happy about the ultimate result against the C's but I do feel that were happy to take the unofficial title of the best young team in basketball, a mantra that has quickly shifted to Oklahoma City or Memphis this season.

Rose didn't look the least bit intimidated on the big stage against Boston and the future looked bright for the former University of Memphis star and his teammates. Sure, Rose lost one of his running mates in the offseason when the sharp-shooting Ben Gordon fled for Detroit but coach Vinny Del Negro still came into this campaign with plenty of talented options to place alongside his star.

Rose figured to grow with the team's other young talent like big men Joakim Noah and Tyrus Thomas. Meanwhile, Chicago welcomed back a healthy Luol Deng in an effort to improve on the boards and at the defensive end.

Things haven't translated on the floor, however. As we head to the All-Star break, the Bulls stand a game under .500 (23-24) in the top-heavy Eastern Conference. Another playoff appearance is virtually assured but it's hard to imagine Chicago competing with the big dogs like Cleveland, Orlando, Boston and Atlanta.

Rose has overcome a slow start due to an ankle injury and the Bulls, who underachieved badly early, looked ready to take off when they won the final five games of a seven-game Western swing, a surge that put them over .500. Chicago then let down in its return to the United Center against the LA Clippers and followed that with a rather uninspired performance in Philadelphia during an overtime loss to the hapless 76ers.

The sum just hasn't been equal to its parts in Chicago this season.

A midseason trade last year that landed veterans Brad Miller and John Salmons from Sacramento helped the Bulls immensely, and should have paid even bigger dividends this season after a full training camp playing together. Instead Del Negro, who had no head coaching experience before taking over as the Bulls' mentor before last season, has had trouble fitting everyone into a consistent rotation.

Earlier in the season Del Negro seemed to be on the fast track for a trip to the unemployment line, but the team's recent up tick seems to have solidified his job status for now and attention has been turned to the roster where everyone from Salmons and Miller to Thomas and Kirk Hinrich have been mentioned in trade rumors.

A shakeup isn't likely to help.

The engine of this team remains its youth. Rose, an excellent ball-handler who can get to the front of the rim at will, made his first All-Star team, while Noah, who has arguably been the NBA's most improved player, averaging 11.2 ppg and 12.0 rpg, isn't far behind. Those two have been joined in the starting lineup by rookie Taj Gibson.

The inexperience had shown at times.

George Bernard Shaw once said "Youth is wasted on the young."

The Bulls have the talent but their coach and young stars don't have enough experience in an NBA game where hindsight becomes the foresight of the truly great teams.

In fact, the only real source of knowledge in this league is that experience Chicago is lacking.

The result? A Second City showdown.

Iguodala named to US National Team program

Featuring nine members of the gold medalist 2008 U.S. Olympic Team and a total of 11 Olympians who have captured a combined 15 Olympic medals (nine gold medals and six bronze medals), USA Basketball revealed today 27 players who have been named to the 2010-2012 USA Men's National Team program.  The selections were announced by USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo.
 

"This is another important step in the reassembling of the USA National Team for the next three years of competitions that will include the FIBA World Championship in 2010, and if we qualify, the 2012 Olympics in London.  Unlike 2006-08 when we were first starting the program, this time we have the benefit of including players who were members of the last national team, while also incorporating players who were involved in our pipeline the last couple of summers," said Colangelo, who also served as Managing Director of the 2006-08 USA National Team.

"Special recognition and acknowledgement needs to go to the nine players returning from our 2008 Olympic Team. They have demonstrated that they are the heart and soul of our program and their commitment to continue to represent their country should not be overlooked.

"Just as was the case in 2006-08, the composition of the USA National Team will be fluid and by that I mean there could be additions to this group.  We've learned to expect that you may have injuries; there may be special circumstances where players can't perform, so you need flexibility with regards to the addition and deletion of players in the program.

"This is the group from which we will build our 2010 World Championship squad. We are taking the Worlds very seriously and know that this is the most important basketball competition in international basketball and it needs to be respected accordingly.  We won gold at the 2008 Olympics because of the team we were able to assemble and build and we'll all be hard at work to do that again, and finish on top in Turkey this summer."

Returning to the USA National Team for 2010-12 are 2008 Olympic gold medalists Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets); Carlos Boozer (Utah Jazz); Chris Bosh (Toronto Raptors); Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers); Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic); LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers); Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets); Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat); and Deron Williams (Utah Jazz). Rounding out the list of Olympians on the national squad roster are 2004 Olympic bronze medalists Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Lakers) and Amar'e Stoudemire (Phoenix Suns).

Completing the list of National Team players are LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland Trail Blazers); Chauncey Billups (Denver Nuggets); Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder); Rudy Gay (Memphis Grizzlies); Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers); Danny Granger (Indiana Pacers); Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers); Al Jefferson (Minnesota Timberwolves); David Lee (New York Knicks); Brook Lopez (New Jersey Nets); Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); O.J. Mayo (Memphis Grizzlies); Kendrick Perkins (Boston Celtics); Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls); Gerald Wallace (Charlotte Bobcats) and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder).

"I'm really excited about the players who were selected and who committed to be part of the 2010-12 USA National Team.  I'm especially pleased that so many members of the 2006-08 team wanted and were able to return," said USA and Duke University Hall of Fame head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "We know from our prior experiences that continuity, team work, and player versatility are critical parts to assembling a team that will be successful.

"With these 27 players we've got a great mix of players who are now experienced in the international game and some of the most promising and exciting players coming up though the USA Basketball program. I know I speak for the entire coaching staff when I say we're excited about this group of players and we're eager to begin our preparations for the 2010 World Championship."

Vicks admits lack of work ethic in Atlanta

Larry Hairstein of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports a contrite Michael Vick told an Atlanta radio station Wednesday he wishes he had shown more dedication to his craft while quarterbacking the Falcons.

"There was a lot more I could have done off the field and in the film room that could have elevated my game to a different level," Vick said. "I was complacent at the time, somewhat lazy, and I settled for mediocrity. I thought what I was doing was enough."

Now, Vick says he is training hard for what may be his last opportunity to start in the NFL.

"I'm stronger, I feel fast and I'm back to my old-school workouts," he said. "I think you'll see a big difference this year. I want to play my best football up until the age of 34 and 35, and I'm going to put everything into it.  Just imagine what I could have been doing if I really would have been applying myself. That's a regret I have."

The book on Vick in Atlanta was that he was the last player to practice and meetings and the first to leave.

Iverson still out

Allen Iverson will miss the Sixers' last two games before the All-Star break,  tonight vs. Minnesota and tomorrow in Toronto as he continues to deal with an illness to one of his daughters.

Iverson is scheduled to return to the Sixers' lineup against Miami next Tuesday at the Wachovia Center.

It remains unclear if Iverson will play in the All-Star game.

Eagles must make decision on DMac by May

Bob Grotz of the Delaware County Times reports Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is due a $6.2 million roster bonus in early May.

The timing of that bonus isn’t a coincidence, according to Grotz. It gives the Eagles time to make a decision.

CBS3 scores big with Super Bowl

More than 2.8 million local viewers tuned into  CBS 3 last night to watch the New Orleans Saints defeat the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.

The program drew a 48.6 household rating/65.7 share, which translates to  more than 2.8 million viewers in the Philadelphia market, according to  Nielsen. The audience increased 5 percent over last year’s Super Bowl  telecast.

CBS 3’s Eyewitness News at 11 p.m. with Susan Barnett, Chris May, Kathy Orr  and Beasley Reece also drew numbers to cheer about, a 13.6 rating/25.8  share to dominate among late newscasts.   Sports Zone, hosted by Reece and   Don Bell, earned one of its highest ratings ever with a 6.4 rating/15.3  share following the newscast.

Williams, Iverson both miss practice

Sixers  guards Lou Williams and Allen Iverson both missed practice today.

Williams was sidelined with a sinus infection while Iverson conitues to deal with his daughter's undisclosed illness.

Flyers acquire Ville Leino from Red Wings

The Flyers acquired forward Ville Leino from the Detroit Red Wings over the weekend in exchange for
Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and a fifth round draft pick in 2011.


"Ville is a skilled forward that is going to give us some depth," said GM Paul Holmgren. "I think he has the ability to play up and down our lineup and play with our skilled players. We're excited to have him. He'll join our team hopefully sometime today."


Leino, 26, has four goals and three assists for seven points in 42 games with the Red Wings this season. In 2008-09, he recorded nine points (5G,4A) in 13 games with Detroit, while spending most of the season with
the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings' American Hockey League affiliate, posting 46 points (15G,31A) in 57 contests. He also led Grand Rapids in the Calder Cup Playoffs with 13 points (3G,10A) in 10 games.


In 2007-08, Leino was named MVP of the Finnish Elite League after recording 77 points (28G,49A) in 55 games with Jokerit Helsinki. A native of Savonlinna, Finland, the undrafted Leino was signed as a free
agent by the Red Wings on May 10, 2008.

Independence selects G LeBlanc in Dispersal Draft

The Philadelphia Independence added yet another WPS superstar to the roster with the selection of Karina LeBlanc in the LA Sol dispersal draft.  LeBlanc is the current Canadian National Team goalkeeper and the WPS leader in shutouts in 2009, helping LA capture the regular season title with 12 clean sheets. "Karina LeBlanc and Hope Solo are hands down the two best goalkeepers in Women's Professional Soccer" said
Independence GM Terry Foley.  "Karina has the ability to come up with that one save that makes or breaks a game-she is a major reason that LA was so successful last year and we believe that she will be a huge asset to our defensive line."

LeBlanc earned her first cap with Canada's Full National Team in 1998, and has continued to prove herself as one of the world's top goalkeepers.  She competed at the 1999 Pan-American Games, led Canada to a spot in the 1999 Women's World Cup and a fourth-place finish at the 2003 World Cup, and has served as a worldwide ambassador for the Canadian Women's National Team. LeBlanc shone with Canada in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, posting 12 saves in her team's 2-1 overtime loss to eventual gold winner
Team USA. Independence Head Coach Paul Riley knows the impact that Karina can have in Philly: "She is a great shot blocker, superb positionally, and aggressive coming out of her goal. Karina's leadership qualities on and off the field will be critical for the squad.she is a big time gamer with big time personality."

After spending the last four years as an assistant coach for Rutgers University Women's Soccer, Karina has a strong connection with the tri-state area and is excited about the opportunity to play for Philadelphia: "I have
heard great things from top to bottom about the organization, from the coaching staff to the front office.  I am so thrilled to be joining the Independence to continue living my dream: playing the sport I love at the
highest level every day.  It's an exciting time and I'm really looking forward to the season."

Philadelphia acquired Karina with the second overall pick after Saint Louis Athletica, which traded several players to the Atlanta Beat to gain the first pick in the dispersal draft, used its selection to draft WPS All-Star
Shannon Boxx.  The San Francisco Bay Area team, FC Gold Pride, then selected Marta, WPS's Michelle Akers Player of the Year last year, with the third pick.  Marta was a 2009 WPS All-Star, led the league with 10 goals and was voted FIFA World Player of the Year in December for a record fourth time.

Other first round selections in the dispersal draft included two first round selections from the 2010 WPS Draft (college draft) with North Carolina's Casey Nogueira and Nikki Washington going to the Chicago Red Stars and Sky Blue FC, respectively. The Boston Breakers picked up veteran defender Stephanie Cox with the fifth pick, while the Washington Freedom grabbed one of last year's top rookies, Brittany Bock with the seventh selection. Closing out the first round, Saint Louis Athletica picked up another WPS All-Star and midfielder Aya Miyama.

Philadelphia also acquired another strong defender in the dispersal draft with their 15th pick overall, selecting Estelle Johnson from the University of Kansas.  After completing a standout senior season with the Jayhawks this fall, Estelle was picked 25th overall in the 2010 WPS College Draft by the Los Angeles Sol.  "Former Sol GM Charlie Naimo thinks very highly of Johnson" said Foley of the team's decision to bring Johnson to Philadelphia. "She had a great college career and we are excited to see what she will add to the Independence."

The acquisition of LeBlanc and Johnson further strengthens the Independence roster and will make the defensive line one of the toughest in the league. "We are excited about the results of today's dispersal draft and we are certain that all the Sol players will be great assets to whichever teams they were selected by" said Foley.  "They add even more depth to each team, and we believe it will only intensify the competition of every game." 

Phils sign P Villarreal

The Phillies have signed veteran right-hander Oscar Villarreal to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, according to MLB.com.

Villarreal missed the entire 2009 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last April.

Villarreal last pitched in the Majors for the Astros in '08, going 1-3 with a 5.02 ERA in 35 relief appearances, striking out 21 and walking 17 in 37.2 innings. His best season came with the Braves in '06, when he finished 9-1 with a 3.61 ERA in 58 games.

Eagles add Savage to front office

The Philadelphia Eagles have named Phil Savage as a Player Personnel Consultant for the 2010 draft.

In this role, Savage will work with Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman and Director of Player Personnel Ryan Grigson in their draft preparations, specifically in the evaluation of draft prospects in the Southeast portion of the country.

“I’ve always admired the work Phil Savage has done,” said Roseman. “And after spending time with him this past year, I realized how well we could work together. Phil is an excellent talent evaluator and having an extra set of eyes for us to utilize will definitely help our scouting staff as we prepare for the draft. He’s spent time working on the 2010 draft class already, so Ryan and I thought it is was a slam dunk when the opportunity was there for us to add him to our staff.”

Said Savage, who served as the radio color analyst for the Crimson Tide Sports Network in 2009: “This is a great opportunity for me to get back in the NFL. I’m really excited about the role the Eagles have afforded me and I’m ready to help Howie and the rest of their scouting staff in the best way I possibly can.”

The 44-year-old Savage spent four seasons as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Cleveland Browns from 2005-08. In his four years with the Browns, the team acquired five Pro Bowl players (three through the college draft) and won a franchise-best 10 games in 2007. That year, the Browns had six players selected to the Pro Bowl (Derek Anderson, Joshua Cribbs, Braylon Edwards, Ryan Pontbriand, Joe Thomas, and Kellen Winslow), which was the most by the franchise since six players were chosen in 1995

Prior to his stint with Cleveland, Savage enjoyed a nine-year run with the Baltimore Ravens. He was hired as the Director of College Scouting by Vice President of Player Personnel Ozzie Newsome in 1996 and held that position for seven years. He was elevated to Director of Player Personnel in 2003. In that time period, the Ravens acquired 11 Pro Bowl players through the college draft, including Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis, who helped Baltimore to a victory over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV. 

In 1991, after a brief stint with the San Antonio Riders of the World League, Savage was hired by Cleveland Browns head coach Bill Belichick as a defensive assistant. He worked for three years as an assistant for defensive coordinator Nick Saban breaking down opponent tapes and working with the defensive backs. Savage also helped prepare for the Browns’ drafts by scouting potential prospects. Following the 1993 season, he moved to the player personnel department as an area scout for the West coast before being promoted to National Scout in 1995.

The Mobile, AL, native attended Murphy High School where he played football and baseball. From Murphy, Savage continued his academic and athletic career at the University of the South. He quarterbacked the Tigers’ football team and was a three-time all-conference selection on the baseball team as a shortstop. Savage majored in English and graduated in 1987. From there, he spent three seasons as a graduate assistant at Alabama on Bill Curry’s staff and worked under offensive coordinator Homer Smith in 1988-89. Savage followed Smith to UCLA in 1990 and coached the tight ends. During his time at Alabama, he earned his graduate degree in Physical Education.

Eagles promote two coaches

The Philadelphia Eagles promoted Mike Caldwell to assistant linebackers coach and Michael Zordich to defensive quality control coach.

Caldwell spent the last two seasons as the Eagles defensive quality control coach after enjoying an 11-year NFL career as a linebacker with Cleveland (1993-95), Baltimore (1996), Arizona (1997), Philadelphia (1998-2001), Chicago (2002), and Carolina (2003). He played in 159 career regular season games and posted 14.5 sacks and eight interceptions, while proving to be a top special teams performer. In fact, Caldwell was voted by his teammates as the Eagles special teams’ most valuable player in 1998. A native of Oak Ridge, TN, Caldwell played collegiately at Middle Tennessee State before becoming a third round draft pick of the Browns in 1993.

A veteran of 12 NFL seasons as a defensive back, Zordich spent the 2009 season as a defensive coaching intern with the Eagles. Prior to joining the Eagles, Zordich had been hired by Youngstown State as a safeties coach early in 2009. He also worked as a defensive assistant at Cardinal Mooney HS in Youngstown from 2003-08. A 9th round draft choice of the San Diego Chargers in 1986, Zordich played in 185 games for the New York Jets (1987-88), Phoenix Cardinals (1989-1993) and the Eagles (1994-98) and recorded 810 tackles, 20 interceptions, five sacks and four touchdowns. A native of Youngstown, OH, Zordich earned All-America honors at Penn State, where he was part of their 1982 National Championship squad.

Union to get lots of national tv exposure

The Philadelphia Union will be featured 17 times on national television during their inaugural season, according to the 2010 Major League Soccer schedule, announced today.  Among the highlights of the MLS expansion club's first schedule are the first game of the MLS season and first in club history vs. Seattle Sounders FC on Thursday, March 25 (ESPN2/ESPN Deportes); the first game in Philadelphia vs. D.C. United on Saturday, April 10 (Fox Soccer Channel) and the first game in the soccer-specific Chester Stadium, on Sunday, June 27 (ESPN2).

"We're all quickly learning what was apparent to our supporters in the Delaware Valley from the start. The rest of the country is now catching up with how special things are here with Philadelphia Union and they want in on it," said Tom Veit, Philadelphia Union President. "The connection we have with our supporters locally is about to expand globally."

The eyes of the world will focus their attention on the Delaware Valley on Thursday, October 7, with the expected return of international stars David Beckham and Landon Donovan to MLS and the LA Galaxy.

"As we have stated from the very beginning, we will play the vast majority of our games in our new stadium," said Nick Sakiewicz, CEO & Operating Partner of KSE and Philadelphia Union. "It is incredibly exciting to see all of the effort and energy we've put into creating our stadium and our team to burst onto the national and international scene.

"Additionally, we're elated to play our first two matches at Lincoln Financial Field, which will enable that many more of our supporters to experience the beginning of what we're working to make sure is a long and prosperous future."

Every team in MLS will visit Philadelphia once in the 30-game regular season, and Philadelphia Union will also travel to each of the other 15 cities in MLS. Of the 17 national games, five will be on Spanish language networks, but also available to be broadcast locally via the team's broadcast partners. Local television schedule will be released later this month.

Philadelphia Union will open the 2010 MLS season, with their first ever First Kick on March 25 in Seattle vs. Sounders FC in a match televised nationally on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes. The club's home opener will be April 10, as Philadelphia Union hosts D.C. United at Lincoln Financial Field. Tickets for games at Lincoln Financial Field will go on sale in early March.  Tickets for games in Chester will go on sale later in the season.

Iguodala not Cavs first choice

The Cleveland Cavaliers want an upgrade at this year's trading deadline but it's becoming increasingly unlikely that the Sixers' Andre Iguodala will be their target. LeBron James reportedly wants Washington's Antawn Jamison and GM Danny Ferry is doing everything he can to appease his superstar. According to CBSSportsline, Indiana's Troy Murphy would be the second option and Iguodala is Plan C.

The Temple University Football Program, under the leadership of fifth-year head coach Al Golden, signed 27 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday.

Geographically, the states best represented in the Owl class are Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with nine student-athletes listing their hometowns in the Keystone state and nine hailing from the Garden State. Nine signees hail from Southeastern Pennsylvania, including eight from the Philadelphia metro area. Golden is holding true to pursuing a MAC title with local talent by signing numerous Pennsylvania and New Jersey players.

Additionally, four signees hail from Virginia, while five signees are from New York (2), Maryland (2), and Florida (1). In groupings, 20 signees are from the tri-state area and six from the DC metro area.

Four of Temple’s signees are already enrolled as mid-year students. Twelve of the 28 served as team captains (43%), while 18 of the 23 high school signees attended the Al Golden Football Camp (78 %).

The Owls begin spring practice on Tuesday, March 16 in preparation for their fourth season of Mid-American Conference play in 2010. The squad’s annual Cherry & White spring game is slated for Saturday, April 17. Temple (9-4, 7-1 MAC) concluded the 2009 season with a trip to the EagleBank Bowl, its first bowl appearance in 30 years. The Owls won a single-season record nine consecutive games en route to the MAC East co-championship.

Eagles hire Jauron

The Eagles have hired ex-Bills head coach Dick Jauron as s senior assistant/defensive backs coach.

Jauron, 59, replaces Brian Stewart, who left to become the defensive coordinator for the University of Houston.


“Long before he became a defensive coordinator and head coach in this league, Dick Jauron was considered to be one of, if not the best defensive backs coaches in the game,” said head coach Andy Reid. “We welcome his experience and knowledge of the game and look forward to adding him to our defensive coaching staff.”

Over three-plus seasons as the head coach for Buffalo, Jauron had a record of 24-33. He was fired this past November after Buffalo stumbled to a 3-6 start.

Jauron has previously worked with Eagles head coach Andy Reid when the two were on Mike Holmgren's staff in the early 1990's in Green Bay.

Jauron was also a head coach with Chicago from 1999-2003, when his Bears teams went 35-46. He was also the interim coach for Detroit in 2005 and went 1-4. 

The Eagles also made a number of moves in their player personnel department.

Ryan Grigson was named director of player personnel. Grigson spent the past four years as the club’s director of college scouting. In this role, Grigson will work closely with general manager Howie Roseman in the day-to-day college scouting operation and the annual draft preparation. He will continue to evaluate college players across the country and aid Roseman in overseeing the Eagles scouting staff, while also scouting players in other professional leagues.


“Ryan is somebody who, professionally and personally, I feel lucky to have on board," Roseman said. "He is an unbelievable advisor for me and somebody I have bounced a lot of ideas off over the years. Ryan is one of the unsung talented evaluators in the National Football League. He has been instrumental in our draft process since day one. He also helped build the St. Louis Rams into a championship football team.  He leaves no stone left unturned in his efforts to find us good players.  Ryan is not only a good scout but one of the best people and family men I have come across in the NFL."

Louis Riddick was also promoted to director of pro personnel. He originally joined the Eagles player personnel department in 2008 as the club’s assistant director of pro personnel. In his new role, Riddick will manage the pro scouting department in evaluating players among the professional ranks, continue his job of advance scouting of upcoming opponents, and prepare the club for acquisitions through free agency and the waiver wire. In addition, he will also assist in the cross check of college players prior to the draft.


“Louis has done a great job for us since he has been an Eagle working with Jon Sandusky [former director of pro personnel; now in Cleveland] and we feel really good that, in having Louis in this role, we will continue to have a strong pro personnel department," Roseman said. "He is a heck of an evaluator that also helps out the coaches with their game advances. He is a really sharp guy, with experience in the NFC East and he earned an opportunity to move up in the ranks. Both Ryan and Louis will do great jobs with their eye for talent, their preparation and their passion for the job."

In another move, Anthony Patch was named assistant director of college scouting. He previously worked as a college scout in the West Coast region. In his new role, Patch will work closely with Roseman and Grigson in draft preparation as well as scouting top players across the country.

 “Anthony is our longest-tenured scout in the building," Roseman said. "His career is an example of what hard work and loyalty can lead to. He has an excellent eye for talent, great relationships throughout football and he is as hard-working a guy as you will find.  We are lucky to be able to keep him and his family as Eagles."

Finally, Andy Speyer was named Southwest regional scout after serving as the team’s Midwest regional scout, while Brett Veach was named pro and college scout after spending the previous three seasons as assistant to the head coach.



“Andy Speyer is a loyal, hard-working scout who does an outstanding job evaluating talent and getting background information," Roseman said. "Brett Veach has shown a keen eye for talent evaluation. He has been somebody we have given more and more responsibility to in the last couple of years and when I was hired into this role I immediately tried to convince Coach Reid to let him come to the personnel side. He has a passion for the job and is going to help us in his new role.”
 

Phils sign OF Guzman

The Phillies have signed outfielder speedy, light-hitting OF Freddy Guzman to a minor league contract, according to the team's Web site.

Guzman, 29, spent last season with the Triple A affiliates of Baltimore, Seattle, Boston and the New York Yankees.

In 101 games, he hit .223 with two homers and 17 RBI but stole 45 bases in 54 attempts.

Iverson out tonight

Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson will not play against the Bulls tonight because one of his children is ill.

Iverson was excused from practice Tuesday to deal with the issue, and the team said the All-Star guard would sit out against the Bulls. He is expected to play Friday at New Orleans.

Iverson has averaged 14.4 points in 25 games since he returned to the Sixers in December.

Eagles sign P Brooks

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed punter Durant Brooks to a two-year contract.

Originally a sixth round draft choice of Washington in 2008, Brooks (6-0, 204) played in the first six games for the Redskins in his rookie campaign, but was released on 10/21/08. He recorded a 39.6 gross punting average on 26 punts, with nine punts downed inside the 20-yard line and no touchbacks. He later signed to the Green Bay Packers practice quad on 12/13/08 and remained there for the balance of the year. Brooks spent the 2009 preseason with the Packers, but did not make the team.

A two-year letterman at Georgia Tech, Brooks was mentored by family friend and legendary punter Ray Guy, who lives in Thompson, GA. Brooks later won the Ray Guy Award as a senior in 2007, which is given annually to the best college punter in the nation. That year, he booted 65 punts for 2,929 yards (45.1 average), including 33 inside the 20-yard line and a long of 77 yards. Brooks averaged 45.3 yards per punt during his career, which was the highest career average in ACC history. He also set an NCAA record for most punts over 50 yards over a two-season span with 57.

The 24-year-old Brooks is a native of Gordon, GA and attended Tattnall Square Academy, where he played punter, wide receiver, tight end and safety.

Union reach agreement with Pennsylvania Power and Light on naming rights for Stadium

The Philadelphia Union have reportedly come to an agreement regarding the naming rights of their newly-built soccer stadium in Chester.

According to SportsBusiness Journal, the club has reached a 10-year agreement with Pennsylvania Power & Light that will allow the name of the Allentown-based energy company to be incorporated into the team’s stadium name.

The deal is said to be worth $20 million.

Hold Your Water

What the Phoenix Coyotes are doing isn't something short of a miracle.

OK, so after a win on Sunday in Dallas, the club occupies the fourth spot in
the Western Conference with a 33-18-5 record -- which is the best mark for the
team at this period in the season since the late 1990's -- and they're also
second in the Pacific to powerhouse San Jose.

They've accomplished all this against the backdrop of constant shenangians
between the NHL and various ownership groups vying for control of the
franchise, and the looming spectres of contraction and relocation.

Still, it's hard to see the Coyotes' rise as anything other than a natural
reaction to adverse circumstances. You either collapse or rise to the
occasion.

This time around, the eager young charges under Dave Tippett are in the zone
where they don't know they're not supposed to be this good; only that they
need to play to shut out all other distractions and there's nowhere to go but
up with nothing to lose.

It doesn't say anything about the psychological makeup of the team heading
into the pressure-cooker of a playoff race, and it certainly isn't an
indicator of any future success.

At best, Phoenix can hope to shock the hockey world for one season and one
season only; the law of averages in an overstuffed league and an uber-
competitive conference will catch up to them.

It's nice that people are finally trekking across the desert to Glendale to
see a winner when faced with the prospect of not having a team. It won't be so
nice when reality sets in and the club performs to its talent level and the
mass of humanity shifts away.

We Wuz Robbed (Repeatedly)

I write this especially for Flyers fans, but in general to those who are fans
of the NHL in general:

The league is NOT anti-your-team, they are PRO-Penguins. In short the laundry
list looks like this:

The league allowed the Pens to tank the 2003-04 season in order to compete in
the Ovechkin/Malkin sweepstakes, continued the charade in 2005 with the rigged
draft lottery system allowing the club to get the top spot in order to pick
Sidney Crosby; worked out a complex arena deal with the Lemieux ownership and
the state of to prevent the Pens from heading to Kansas City; chose not to
suspend Malkin during last year's Stanley Cup Finals despite a clear,
suspendable offense; consistently tilted or ignored calls in both Canada and
North America which benefit the Penguins.

I suggest that the fans of the remaining 29 teams get used to this fact and
stop complaining when the inevitable occurs. I also suggest that the
management, coaches and players of the remaining 29 teams find the personnel,
system -- and above all else, discipline -- to overcome this obstacle.

Your College Hockey Minute

The first two Mondays in February means just one thing among hockey fanatics:
Beanpot time in Boston.

Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern pair off for Hub
hockey bragging rights in a tournament which, aside from its current student
bodies and alumni, sadly means nothing to the rest of the hockey world.

Nonetheless, for those of us who have moved out of the area, it's a time to
crack open the piggy bank and bribe the bartender at the pub that has
satellite TV.

In 2010, BC plays Northeastern at 5 p.m. and BU takes on Harvard at 8 p.m.,
with the winners squaring off at TD Garden next week.

Boston University has dominated of late, winning 15 of the last 20 Beanpots
and 29 all-time. Boston College has won 14 titles with the last coming two
years ago, while Harvard hasn't won since 1993 and Northeastern the red-headed
stepchild of the group hasn't tasted victory since 1985.
