"I am honored to be a member of the Washington Wild Things," Obal said. "I am excited to go out and try and help the team in whatever way I can."
A two-time all Philadelphia Big 5 selection, Obal batted .313 with a career-high 44 RBI during his senio season. His 19 doubles were tied for second on the team and in the city and he hit safely in 39 of 49 games. Defensively he allowed just two passed balls.
"We're proud and excited for Kyle to begin his career in professional baseball," Temple head coach Rob Valli said. "He has worked so hard to get to this point and we know he will be an asset to the Wild Things."
A three-year starter, Obal compiled 162 hits and 80 RBI at Temple. The Derwood, Md. native (Sherwood HS) batted .296 for his career with the Owls.
The Frontier League has 12 teams in the Midwest in Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Based in Troy, IL, the Frontier League is an independent professional league that was formed in 1993. Kalamazoo currently leads the Frontier League East Division with a 28-17 record.
Temple has had seven players sign independent professional contracts since 1999, including Mike Mongiardini who signed in 2008 with the Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League. Overall, 45 players have signed free agent contracts in addition to the 23 players selected in the Major League Draft since 1966.
